201. Coca-Cola Magicans (1990)
1
#52 on The Spy 100 of 1990.
These were advertised primarily by commercials during the Spring of 1990 with the New Kids on the Block singing about “magic in the real thing”. Here is one from a 1990 first season Simpsons commercial break.
Upon retrospect, you just knew it was a poorly executed idea. Consumers are stupid.
A little kid drank the liquid out of a can with $5 in it, and his parents rushed him to the hospital, thinking it was another Tylenol incident since Coke put foul smelling water in cans that were winners to deter people from drinking the can once retrieving their prize. The company then came out with “Take a GOOD look!” commercials.

On June 1st, 1990, a month after the promo began with those New Kids commercials, Coca-Cola ended the promotion.
Strangely enough, Coca-Cola acknowledges the MagiCan on their history website.
Here is a pic of one in action that someone kept after all these years, and a blog entry that includes a pic of the press kit.

This video is so awesome.
The girl in the vid is not "society's type of beauty".
Also, I would like to say that there is no such thing as just one kind of beauty. There isn't such a thing. We should all break free from all these socially constructed ideas of beauty, of what women should look like.
Every woman in a real woman.
Yes.
