as a longtime f1 fan who just watched NLS and IMSA for the first time this year... I may have been wrong about f1 being the epitome of motorsport. just watched the NLS-2 verstappen overtake on haase and it was the most electric overtake I've ever seen?? the two cars were alongside for a good 5 seconds??? the comments tell me this is a *normal* overtake in NLS?????
max at the nls
he did it!!!
Christopher Haase went on the Mennem podcast to chat NLS and here are some fun bits about Max, the race, the upcoming 24h and the track:
He was a bit bummed out over not getting pole because he thought the car had it in it on Saturday morning. He actually wanted to go out a bit later but there was some miscommunication in the team and due to traffic he never had a good window to go for his best lap.
He said of course it's amazing to have Max there but he's a racer and all he wants to do is beat him.
From the start onwards he knew he had to position himself well at Döttinger Höhe, which is what he did and overtook Max.
Asked about BOP and whether he was sandbagging ahead of the 24h (which is very common during qualifiers) or flat out, he said: Yeah, I was flat out. And surely Max too cause everything I saw in my rearview mirror was very strong. Hats off to him. I have to say, he doesn't have that much experience round here. So amazing performance.
He mentioned at the start of the season, so NLS 1 and 2, people are much more friendly in traffic management. The longer the season goes on, the spicier things get.
On whether Max touched his rear during that crazy moment during the Code 60: They didn't touch. Christopher went off the brakes for a moment when he saw Max in his mirrors but emphasised that these moments are super common, esp during the 24h race. Sometimes it's super hard to see flags as the following car.
On the media attention he got after his stint against Max: He got a lot of messages and said he could not read all of them but said that 95% of them were super positive. He says he gets up every morning and lives for motorsport, so getting that reward was super nice and motivated him even more and that he felt appreciated.
They also discussed the hype around the 24h race. There's already a wait list cause only 150 cars are permitted and they already reached the limit.
They noticed an uptick in interest in GT racing since the pandemic but obviously having Max there is a huge boost and will surpass expectations.
He was asked how much water weight people lose in a 24h race. Christopher reckons it's 2-3 kilos.
He was asked about his favourite corner. He said Stefan-Bellof-S (turn 38) and described how it feels in a GT3 car (they're all a bit insane, it's just amazing to listen to them describe the sensation):
"Yeah, it’s absolutely brilliant. You have to imagine: you come into Pflanzgarten 1, jump, tap the brakes briefly to shift down a gear, then you hit the throttle and go full beans. Pflanzgarten 2, the crest, and then you hit that compression. You’re basically revving out of fifth gear, you’ve got that Stefan Bellof right-left, so I’d say, that’s where the G-forces really kick in. It’s an amazing bit."
psa for max verstappen fans
the nurburgring-langstrecken serie 2 (NLS 2) GT race that max verstappen will be racing in is THIS saturday! verstappen will be racing for mercedes-AMG team verstappen racing. (yes, THAT mercedes-AMG... toto got him, just not in f1!)
NLS 2 is an endurance race lasting 4 hours, so max will have 3 teammates:
lucas auer
jules gounon
daniel juncadella
the race will be from 7 am to 11 am ET/4 am to 8 am PT this saturday, march 21. it'll be free to stream or replay on the NLS YouTube.
i have no words
one thing i will always love about verstappen is how hard he pushes to hunt down anyone ahead
from 3.3s -> 1s in less than a lap
insane!!!!
