Dies Irae

Dies Irae was written in the first century, and we do not know who wrote it. This is a great example of a Gregorian Chant. In this chant, there is not a clear rhythm or beat, this causes the song to not have a nice foot-tapping sound. This is also just the melody, no accompaniment, no harmony, just melody. That makes this monophonic. There is also a clear progression of notes, the notes are just steps away from one another. So it is a very smooth melody, with no harmony, no rhythm. Nothing that makes you want to listen to the song. Another thing that goes against what I think makes a song good is tonality, the use of musical tone to set the mood of a song. Dies Irae uses a modal scale, which means it is neither major nor minor.... like was this song trying to be the worst song, i think so. So, the modern listener has an issue now, how to tell the mood. Historically, this would be sung in churches for the edification of fellow Christians, and the glory of God, so we can assume the mood is very reverent. The average listener at the time would also not be able to understand it very clearly, not because it was not modern, but because it was not in their vernacular language.
