For most of his papacy, Pope Francis had a sign hanging on the door of the simple room where he lived in the Vatican's Casa Santa Marta guesthouse -- a placard resembling a "No Smoking" sign which warned in Italian "No Complaining" or "No Whining".
According to a translation by the Catholic news website Aleteia, the sign declared:
"Violators are under the influence of I'm a victim syndrome with a resulting decrease in sense of humor and in the capacity to solve problems. Punishment will be double if the violation is committed in the presence of children. In order to become the best "you," you must concentrate on your own potential and not on your own limitations. Therefore: Stop complaining and get busy making your life better."
Pope Francis was delighted when he was given the sign in 2017 by an Italian psychologist and self-help author, Salvo Noe, and said he was going to find a place in his office to display it as a joke. Instead, the Pope had it placed directly on his door in the Vatican guesthouse where he lived. The sign stayed in that prominent position for the remainder of Francis' papacy and -- as seen in the photo below -- was still on the door when Cardinal Camerlengo Kevin Farrell officially sealed the papal residence following the death of the Pope.
