So many fanarts to draw and yet I'm slow as turtle 😔 Lines are from No.6 Beyond 💖😢
reread the no.6 novel and no.6 beyond and I'm reeling. I love it so much. I love shion so much. He's a freak, he's so helplessly and tragically in love, that it takes over his hole being, he hates himself so much, he's genuine and feels too much, he has great empathy but blames himself for being ignorant and for the circumstances hes in while doing more than anyone to right the wrongs. He found a place where he finally belonged despite the struggle and he's now back to where he came from, left by the love of his life, struggling to do diplomacy and politics, with PTSD, realising he has to be ruthless to achieve certain goals and straying further and further from the point of it all. He's NOT ok and it breaks my heart and I'm NOT ready for Reunion.
Putting this cross-posting this and on Discord and Tumblr because this is so intriguing
Shion and the snake imagery isn't too new in No.6 meta or casual posts, which is why I want to see the snake skin shedding metaphor as a division between two Shions: the perfect Shion and the imperfect Shion, and tying this to the self-contempt Shion had in the original Nine novels (double identity Shion dojhwoidv)
Original 9 suggested that from Safu, before Shion, the brown hair Shion had so many expectations and awards that things were being planned for him in the educational program. Even as he was removed from the program, Shion from before still got a job that he can sustain for quite a while. The Shion from within the walls was 'perfect' -- a highly intelligent person who had backup plans over backup plans when things are not right. The Shion as an identity crafted by No.6 itelf and holds the 'perfection' indifference of his.
Meanwhile, the Shion that survived the West Block and searched through the Correctional Facility, the Shion that reached out to Nezumi - the Shion who is conflicted and re-awaken is 'imperfect' - the person work for a new identity and the person who is more emotionally driven and hated -- really hated himself -- bit his tongue in frustration and disbelief of himself.
What separates them is the 'illusion' that was partially crafted by No.6. When Shion said that he isn't as truthful as Nezumi or Safu, I think this is what it is - the perfection in Shion is all a lie (or at least that's what he thinks, and its partially right via ignorance of the world outside). As the 'walls' within Shion breaks, Nezumi is one of the only people he can trust because that is what he's left of the world that lied to him.
Thinking back to the thought that there's a jarring voice that tells Shion he is weak, and that if he is going to leave Nezumi to save himself. I think that is 'Perfect Shion's voice - is that kind of twisted No.6 narrative that influences this thought - the narration of 'individualistic success', 'finding reason above all' kind of thought from Perfect Shion to Imperfect Shion
In Beyond and later Reunion, I think 'Imperfect Shion' is working through the scraps of 'Perfect Shion' - that indifference and more interrogative nature of the Shion who is built to think in highly bureaucratic and demanding nature - but also with the critical understanding, experience of Imperfect Shion - then it is Shion trying to figure himself out
Little comic sketch thingie because I have lots of feelings about Beyond!Shion's PTSD and this moment just took me man
Shion, your name always gets me involved in some kind of conflict. I hope you're aware of that.
No.6 Beyond
I miss No.6, I miss that that it was my first anime I watched at 12 and a that time it was so easy to empathize with Nezumi and Shion. At 16 I understood why Nezumi hated the place he lived in the place that killed his loved ones without concern just like the U.S. has done mine. I miss the books the most (if you have not read them I HIGHLY recommend it they have after the anime ends a Nezumi hospital trip all that it’s way more in depth). The show was turned into a BL and the story was ignored but really..it was about a society that began to put luxury and comfort over the worth of human lives to the point they would simply throw them in piles to get rid of them because they were inconvient. The story shows how people who are wronged can take on that persona and feel like that is what they are meant to be. It shows how you can never blindly trust things and how seeking out the truth is not for the weak and how TONS AND TONS of people would rather live in comfort knowing others suffer than sacrifice luxury to give to another. And the fact this wonderful story was thrown away for the two boys who shared two kisses pisses me off because this is what we are living. We aren’t at this level but this has been going on for a while and rather than pay attention to it we ignored it for the comfort of a forbidden love story....I miss the show I loved so much and the messages held within about human nature and yet I don’t even feel the story itself got the love it deserved
The ending of the Beyond novel stuck with me for a while
