GUARDS! GUARDS! The Graphic Novel

I read the Guards! Guards! novel for the first time only a few months ago and rated it an easy 5 Stars. Of course, with any graphic novel adaptation of a 12 hour book, you’re going to have to trim the fat. The problem with that is there is very little fat in Pratchett’s books. Everything is purposeful and you lose nuance and humor by cutting any of it. So the novelty of this is the art. It’s purely subjective, but I feel mixed overall. It’s highly stylized yet quite inconsistent. Why, for instance, does 16 year old Carrot sometimes look 40 years old? Vimes looks more or less like a normal human, while Wonce’s head is shaped like a scythe. I suppose it’s a little reminiscent of Disney’s Ichabod and Brom. One element I thought was done consistently well, however, were the dragons. Errol was definitely a highlight here.

After reading, I can say I would not recommend this to anyone who hasn’t read the book. It’s no substitute. But it’s still funny and interesting to see the story come to life in this unique format. 3/5⭐️
