i just saw your text post and i was wondering what the no control project was?

It was a fan initiative to get radio stations to play No Control as if it were a single off the album. It was successful; the song was played on BBC1 by Nick Grimshaw, and several other DJs picked it up after that. The goal was mainly to publicize the new sound of One Direction since fans felt that Four was underappreciated. This is one of the posts that started it and here is the BBC article about it.

why the no control project should never have happened?

The No Control project was started because “Since 1DHQ thinks FOUR didn’t need any promo, it looks like its up to us, the fans, to do it.”

There was a feeling amongst fans that the album was underappreciated. No Control was a fan favorite from the day it leaked, but they didn’t add it to the setlist until fans initiated a global campaign to give the song attention. That shouldn’t have had to happen. If the album had been promoted properly, if they had chosen better singles, if they had listened to the fans, then the fans would have been satisfied.

At the end of the day we are customers who buy songs from One Direction, the brand. You would think they would want to keep those customers satisfied. Project No Control, to me, indicated a broader problem because apparently the customers - the fans - were not satisfied with the product they were sold.

I’m not sure what this means, exactly - I’m not sure why their promo sucks. i don’t know if it’s Simon or Sony or Syco or whoever. But my point with that post was simply that it shouldn’t have been our responsibility to promote No Control. It isn’t our job to promote the album. They should be promoting the album to us, not the other way around. 

We shouldn’t feel guilty or ashamed because they have a shitty PR team. If they want us to buy the album then they can start listening to the people they’re selling it to. If fans feel that they have reason not to buy the album, then they don’t have to buy it.

THAT HAPPENED LIKE 40 MINUTES AGO LOUIS IS STALKING US

I was talking w some people on twitter about the #s we'll use to support No Control day tomorrow and then randomly, a bunch of Zayn people started RT'd it and telling us how shitty we are for trying to erase Zayn and Louis' voice is shit and blah blah blah. I don't understand why they're like this. Most of the Zayn # is bashing 1D as if he wasn't in the band a few months ago. I'm not even thinking about Z rn! I'm just trying to get Lou the recognition he deserves. What is so bad about that?

I honestly think that the people who are working against this project feel threatened and defensive because it’s making them realize that Zayn is really, truly no longer in the band.  

I can’t tell you how many tweets I’ve seen along the lines of “once 1D, always 1D” or “I’ll always pretend Zayn is still in One Direction”.  Statements like that make me really uncomfortable.  He left the band.  No one is trying to “erase” him (at least not that I’ve seen).  

He left the band and we’re respecting that choice.  

Of course Zayn deserves credit for everything he did with 1D, but as we move on and look to support One Direction in the future, that future no longer includes Zayn.  If you support Zayn as an artist, you are doing so separately from One Direction.  That doesn’t mean it’s a competition - it just means that Zayn and One Direction are no longer one and the same.

Zayn left the band.  That was his choice.  I respect his decision, so I’m not going to pretend he’s still in the band.  I’m also not going to support a trend about a demo Zayn himself didn’t even release.  We don’t even know if Zayn wanted that out there.   Personally, it makes me really uncomfortable and I think it’s very entitled to demand something of Zayn right now.  

The people demanding “I Won’t Mind” from Zayn right now are thinking of themselves, not of him. 

The No Control project is NOT about competing with Zayn.  It’s about supporting a forgotten album.

Basically, there has been a feeling in the fandom for a while that Four has been overlooked as an album and badly promoted by 1DHQ, with only two songs being released and no plans for any more.  ... It's a really good display of the fact that the fans are not the young teen girls that 1DHQ seem to assume we are. The four of us are all over 30, and this fandom has come together to promote the music above all else.

THIS IS SO IMPORTANT.

This project isn’t just promoting the new sound of the band, it’s promoting what One Direction fans look like in 2015.  And they no longer look like the 15-year-old fan that everyone pictures, with their wall decked out in posters from Claire’s and Harry’s face on their pillow (no offense to anyone who has their wall decked out in posters from Claire’s and Harry’s face on their pillow. Like. Same).

The point being, it says something that the idea for this originated with a 23-year-old fan, and the fans featured in this article are all over 30.   

That is NOT who people expect One Direction fans to be.

 Every single fan that I heard call into Julian’s show last night when he was taking requests for 1D songs - every single one - thanked the other fans for doing this.  That’s huge.  We are a united fan base, and we’ve disagreed on a lot over the years, but at the end of the day we’re here for each other and for the music and for our boys.

A lot of radio DJs have been impressed by the fans, and that’s why they’re listening to us.  They see a united fandom filled with positivity and support.  Almost all of the DJs I heard play the song mentioned that the fan support for this is unprecedented (and they were alarmed by the number of tweets they were getting, ha).  This is reminding me of when 1D first gained popularity at an exponential rate and just didn’t... stop.  Let’s not forget that we were the first ones.  We were the first fandom to send a band to worldwide fame overnight using social media.  That’s us.  That’s just how we roll.  And it’s pretty cool that 5 years later, we’re still able to use the power in numbers to give this band the reputation it deserves.
