#project no control

i'm sending you all the standing ovation for your tags in india's ask! cause it's exactly what i've been thinking while i saw all the discourse about charting and streaming numbers unfold. why do we as fans care this much about the numbers??? if they're flopping or not (they're not but even if they were, really, what would it matter to us?!) it doesn't or shouldn't change the way we engage with the music. numbers are for those lining their pockets with the profits. numbers are for the artists to know how much leverage and maneuvering they'll have for the next record. we should just enjoy the music if we like it and buy the records if it's in our financial possibilities.

Due to my profession, I am obviously very aware that this is a complex conversation that should always be nuanced. Plus, while I stand by my point that I don't think fans ever deserve to feel required to do it, I obviously still very much appreciate efforts of lovely fans who are organising among each other and start projects to get their favourite artists to the top of the charts. I could write a lot more about it, but I don't have the brain juice for it tonight.

And I want to say: fan-founded and -led projects in general, though, are definitely a pillar of fandom and help build and keep a strong community. And I am grateful for everyone who decides to start something borne from their passion for something they love.

And aside from chart discussions, I want to mention other projects we had like The Rainbow Project by the amazing @takemehomefromnarnia, Project No Control, and The Bandana Project during the 1D Days - those were also incredible 🏳️‍🌈💕 and so appreciated by the band, as well. I( mean, Harry kept wearing his blue bandana for years afterwards and we all know why 🥰)

and in my quest to reminisce, i found this lovely video about Project No Control and it brought back so many memories, I started crying a little. How amazing a fandom we all were 🥹🥹🥹

Was just on TikTok and someone said the reason we did Project No Control was because of management and no. We did it because Louis, Zayn, and Naughty Boy had beef on twitter and Zayn/Naughty Boy said shit about Louis’ voice. I’m very protective of Project No Control because it was a huge thing in the fandom and it’s an important event.

Also very happy that Zayn and Louis have reconnected and are working on their friendship and hopefully burying the hatchet on things they said out of hurt/anger so I’m not trying to be mean and bring up old stuff, but don’t try to rewrite the ancient text.

Briana Jungwirth was introduced via tabloid on May 11th, the very same week 1D appeared on the Late Late Show and James’ interview that night focused on Louis (shockingly not Harry) talking about Louis breaking up with Eleanor and going out with his friends partying. Per the timeline, we’re supposed to believe Briana got pregnant this very week as well. 😐 That’s a lot. Draw what you see.

I remember back in the PNC days there was heavy evidence of label support, but the loudest people shouted that the fans got it successful and that became the story, but I never believed that was actually true. I can't remember how some people figured it out, but I remember.

I never saw any “proof”, but it just doesn’t make sense that fans could force a song to be a single. I think if we’d done nothing it may never have been a single, so our loudness was noticed, but releasing No Control and putting it on the set list definitely served some purpose the label had at the time. What that purpose was is a mystery to me. 

One thing I’ll say for PNC is that it was an amazing time to be a fan. We were so united and so driven towards a common goal and we felt we’d had a success with it. Then Louis and Liam both acknowledged it and we felt we’d done something for them as well. It makes me so sad to see what’s become of us. But I’m so proud to have been even a small part of PNC.
