happy birthday prompto!! to celebrate, i wrote this fic~
Domestic Dates; Mal/Molly - Lumberjanes
A/N: Legit only plot here is that I would like Mal and Molly to have time alone from everyone for the day for a date. I am only on Issue 4/5.
“So...” Mal began sitting beside Molly. Then stopped, the cute girl’s presence alone had made her blush incessantly and forget what she was saying.
“So.” Molly replied with a laugh and turned to look at Mal. No one else was at the table with them for breakfast yet so she decided to ask about that, “Where is everyone?”
“Oh. They... I asked them if they’d have theirs early. I wanted to ask you something.” Mal trailed off once more and began to fiddle with her food; unsure on how to say the next part.
“Yeah, Mal?” Molly replied.
Mal swore the way Molly said her name was like a pet-name in and of itself. She wanted to groan, this was supposed to be easier like yesterday when she thought of the idea.
Molly’s smile though. She knew she would do anything for that smile.
Finally she asked, “Do you wanna go on a date? Like an actual date? Like we don’t have to worry about getting caught back in time type of date?”
“This is ...”
“Don’t say the name we’ll never leave.”
“Fine, but this is... to abbreviate.. Crumpet’s Camp, I think you’re giving yourself way to high a bar to think we won’t get in messed up Lumberjane’s level danger.”
“I ... uh... asked Rosie if we could have they day out if you said yes.”
“You what?!” Shock took over Molly’s face. Mal simply smiled sheepishly and shrugged. Finally Molly found words again, “And she said yes?”
“Yeah. I was clear with her what it was for and why and everything. Also I owe her like a full night’s cleaning.”
“Cleaning where?”
“The forest apparently.” Mal tried not to think too hard on what stupid, brilliant, terrifying adventures could happen to her midnight forest cleaning. She couldn’t help her mind wondering though.
Molly’s voice broke through her daydreaming, “Mal.”
“Yeah?”
“Yes, I’d love to go on a date with you.” Molly replied and picking up her courage she intertwined their hands. Mal was pretty sure she could have died happy on the spot but noticing how scary it was for Molly to grab her hand she squeezed it back. Together they ate breakfast and got ready before walking to a bike section close to the car park of the camp.
Making sure they were all strapped up they cycled into the nearest town.
The place was gorgeous but lacking in other young people, had it been inside the camp they’d have gone to investigate but it just seemed like a town where a lot more older couples lived. They rode to the canal and sat and watched it go by while they talked for a little while, glad of the privacy but both of them missing their friends a little bit.
They had had a comfortable quietness between them but as Mal mentioned something regarding Riley it opened the gateways to a bustling conversation jumping from the topic of friends to family to tv shows to any random topic that would pop up in their mind. To Molly it was the conversation version of white-water rafting - bouncy, exhilarating and in any other circumstances terrifying. However, these weren’t other circumstances, she was talking to Mal and she could easily keep it going forever if it wasn’t for one thing.
One thing would ruin the longest conversation in world’s recorded history.
That was.... that Mal would not stop looking at Molly’s lips as she talked and the amount it made her heart jump any time Mal did that was enough to make her a llittle breathless. Not that she was any better.
Finally Molly could wait no longer, “Mal?”
“Yeah.”
“Umm... Can I.. Do you want to.. Please may I kiss you?” She could no longer look at Mal as she asked, feeling the heat rise and envelope her face. Both girls were quiet for a short time then Mal’s hand reached over and grabbed Molly’s.
“Of course.. I mean yes.. Yes, yes.” Mal tumbled on her words but no sooner did she say them than Molly turned and looked at her, a moment so endless it felt unreal, almost like she’d savoured it in a snowglobe.
Then Molly pressed her free hand softly to Mal’s cheek and hesitantly kissed her adding another one, more confident but aware of not pushing; even though Mal was kissing back.
“I.. uh. Thank you.” Molly said after and as soon as the words came out of her mouth both girls fell about laughing at the silliness of the behaviour.
When all calmed down Mal mustered all that she had of her courage and asked, “Molly, would you do me the great honour of being my girlfriend?”
“On one condition.”
That was not an answer she had even considered, “Yes?”
“If we get stuck in prehistoric times I get to place blame on you. If it’s actually your fault you best get explaining quick for me to forgive that happening twice.”
“So no pre-historic date?”
“No prehistoric date. At all.” Molly smiled. Mal smiled. Both girls leaned in for a swift, sweet kiss and pinky promised on it.
pt.3.1
Noctis sits on the throne, haloed by light. Crystal fragments twinkle in the air like stars. Some land in his hair, like a crown. Prompto looks at Noctis until his vision blurs and Noctis disappears. Tears slide down Prompto’s face, his neck, and into the collar of his shirt. He can’t breathe, tries to breathe, but it catches in his throat. Noctis told them that this was how it was going to be, but Prompto hoped it would be different, that Noctis would walk down the staircase, smiling. He clutched that thought desperately in his hands, in his heart, until that hope was shattered by the light of dawn.
It feels like forever before Prompto raises his head, but he doesn’t look at Noctis again. Prompto’s eyes are red and raw, and his chest aches, like his ribs have been cracked open and its contents ripped out.
His heart’s on the throne with a sword through it.
Prompto gave his heart to a boy as lonely as he was, gave it to him when he held that letter from Luna, wrinkled and worn at the creases, in his hands. He rubs the back of his hand over his eyes and turns his back to the throne. Ignis clutches his glasses in one hand, and the other covers his face. Prompto touches his arm, curls his fingers in his sleeve.
“Hey,” Prompto says weakly.
Ignis trembles under Prompto’s hand. “I—I did not want to hope.”
“We all hoped.” Noctis came back from the dead once. In the span of a day they had gained all they had lost, and then lost it again. The sun’s light streaming through the window is cold on Prompto’s skin.
“It wasn’t supposed to end like this, he wasn’t—” Gladio looks away from Noctis, hands clenched at his sides.
Ignis breathes in, holds the air in his lungs like he doesn’t want to voice what he’s about to say. “We have to move forward. That’s what he would’ve wanted.”
“Right,” Prompto agrees, a hollow feeling settling in his stomach. “Move forward.”
“How the hell am I supposed to move forward? I dedicate my whole life to him, and he wants me to move forward now?”
Gladio’s words feel like a punch in the gut. The world feels colder, not warmer, with the sun in the sky. Noctis was their light, and without him, their world is dark.
