Considering Christopher Episode 8 - The Prestige
Are you listening closely? This week we are talking about Nolan’s mind-bending fifth film: The Prestige
incredible......... the way christopher nolan continues to write all male friendships as ambiguously romantic........ they can’t be compulsively heterosexual because he has no idea how to write female characters.....
I’m so fucking mad
I just realized that Nolan’s Batman movies could have been so much better in coming full circle if they did one thing....
They could have said that this boy:
Was this man when he grew up:
cause that would have been awesome...
Reviewing the quality with which a thing was made, doing a meta-textual analysis of a thing where you break down quotes from the creator on the project on what they wanted to portray, comparing and contrasting it with another thing it reminded you of, doing a retrospective on all of the work from that creator (or all the work featuring the characters if you're talking about an adaptation), and having just a regular discussion about your opinions on that thing are all valuable forms of engaging with art.
They are all also different conversations, and crossing the wires on that is how you end up trying to convince someone of six different things and end up not convincing them of anything. I've been in that scenario more times than I can count. Sometimes it's because I'm the one who crossed the wires, sometimes it is because the person I'm talking to crossed the wires, and I didn't bother to un-cross them.
Imagine how insufferable you'd look if someone asked you to review The Spongebob Squarepants Movie and you spent 2 hours ranting and raving about how it's not a 1 to 1 adaptation of The Odyssey, discussing 4 other adaptations of The Odyssey, swerving into a conversation about its use of marine biology and then how much time it'd realistically take to travel to Bikini Bottom while nestled in David Hasselhoff's tiddies instead of telling them whether or not it's a good SpongeBob movie. Might still be a fun conversation, might having some engaging moments, not a very good review.
Speaking of The Odyssey, I'll be the nerd hating on Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey for its historical inaccuracies, mostly bc it makes white film bros mad when I hate on Christopher Nolan, but when it comes out I'll also be able to put that conversation down to go "OK now let's stop crying about wanting a completely different movie, shut the fuck up, watch the movie, and review what the movie actually is."
Every time I watch a Nolan film, I come out reminded of why I like hating on him so much - because he truly never makes a movie that is For Me - but at the same time I'll still put respect where respect is due. Dude knows how to make an impressively put-together film. I'm a hater with honor.
i wonder is herb has a letterboxd...
I would love to see his watchlists lmao
