Read a fanfic that made me come to a startling realization/thought: what if, and it’s likely, the Protagonist from the future is dead at the point Neil travels back in time to help the younger version of him? It would explain why the stares are so fucking haunted, rather than just inquisitive at seeing his younger friend (coughhusbandcough).

I’m gonna stand by this theory with my whole ass chest, maybe with the thought he died saving a younger version of Neil.
