GET TO KNOW NOLOGY INTERACTIVE
Tell us a little bit about yourself as far as being a Digital Agency. How did you start and what do you do?
Nology started as a unit of Teamworks Media, handing the interactive needs of the larger media agency. Broken up into business units of tv/video production, marketing and public relations, Nology Interactive able to work with those units on the digital executions of their projects, and we learned a lot along the way about what was important from a marketing and public relations standpoint. At Nology, we were not as focused on sports and entertainment as much as the other units of Teamworks Media, but the principles still applied; catch the audiences’ attention and provide an easy call to action.
What are you currently working on? Please be specific as possible?
We often say that wherever emerging technology is going, we are going with it. We’ve stayed true to that form. 5 years ago, we were a Classic ASP and .Net shop in terms of our programming languages. With the open source revolution, we have adapted and embraced it. We’ve also dabbled in exciting technology such as augmented reality.
Our services that are increasingly being requested are in the mobile development space and in webcasting. We’re using the responsive web design technique to start with a “Mobile First” approach and developing websites that are automatically optimized based off of the device; whether that be a smartphone, tablets such as the iPad or desktops. Although still in its infancy, we have seen great strides being made internally and with other development communities.
With a video production background, we are uniquely situated in the webcasting space. Teamworks was founded in 2001 with the belief that the video was merging with the internet and there were great opportunities for the two. Now, internet access is everywhere and people are digesting great amounts of video content on any device, from any location. Webcasting has allowed people who may otherwise not be able to attend events in person with access to a great amount of the onsite experience.
What is your creative process for developing a new idea or project for a client or internally?
We like to listen to as many ideas as possible, and work back from a particular goal. There are usually many different ways to accomplish a desired outcome, and we want to choose the wisest, factoring in the limitations of time, budgets, resources, etc. From there, we’ll literally draw and write out the plan. All of the team members and client should all be on the same page. There’s times when project team members will be replaced for whatever reason, and it’s important for the person taking over to see where were have come from, and ultimately to participate in the end result. Most times, we’re fighting against a clock.
What 3 Words best describe you? Or what 3 sentences best describe you? You decide.
Get it done
When you’re not working what does Nology like to do?
We’re all over the place. For the most part, it’s family-centric after hours. We’re a bunch of nerds, so if there’s cats on the internet, some type of anything conspiracy related on Youtube and/or Star Wars something or other going on; we’re probably there.
Do you have any good stories about Tragedy and Triumph in Nology’s history?
We live in a world where triumph and tragedy can coexist. For the most part, every project we are involved on has something out of the ordinary that happens, and it’s how you react to those unknowns that defines the company. We believe in Homer Simpson’s “crisatunity” combination of crisis and opportunity.
If Nology were a meal of the day what would you be and why?
Breakfast? Lunch? Dinner? Why?
We’re all about snacks. We’ll straight up snack the heck out of some meals. Popcorn, candy, Slim Jims, cupcakes, etc. Who has the time to sit down and eat a whole meal?
What advice do you have to give to up and coming digital entrepreneurs?
Embrace change. Change is a good thing. While it is part of the job responsibility to become an expert in your field, it’s also important to continuously seek out new technology and become experts in those new opportunities of expertise. Emerging technology is often times finicky, but it is the challenge that is the reward.
Who do you admire and why? Name 1 or 2 people please.
We’re both Google and Apple here, so Steve Jobs, Larry Page and Sergey Brin. With these individuals, you can see a passion that took them from various focuses and how that expanded. Ever changing, forward thinking individuals.
What was the best piece of advice you have ever received? From who?
“Good, fast or cheap; choose two”. This is a mantra that we’ve been using to, in a tongue in cheek way, communicate to clients that we are working within limitations. It may be budget, it may be time, it may be aesthetic, but when push comes to shove; something has to give. Many times, our most precious resource is time.
What are you listening to currently? Music -
Todd Gordon, founder of Nology Interactive, is in a Ramones cover band. Besides that, we are very eclectic. Wu Tang, Beatles are both loved and hated, oldies to old school. We’ve even been treated to a coworker’s son playing classical violin. He’s very talented and totally killed it.
What do you define as success and wealth?
We define them both as bags of cash. If we can’t get bags of cash, we also accept pats on the back or knowing that we performed to the best of our abilities. Sometimes, it’s a thankless job and we understand that. A lot of what we do involves preventing a larger problem, and that might not be as visible to most, unless something goes terribly wrong. When something does not go terribly wrong, we performed our duties.
What can marketing agencies and brands learn from you and your influence?
They can learn that you don’t have to have a large team to do outstanding work. One of our prime differentiators is that we are lean and mean, and we have a very flat organizational structure. If you’re talking with someone from Nology Interactive, they can make decisions. We do not have countless approval processes internally. If it makes sense, then do it.
What inspires you?
Curiosity is really the root of all of our inspiration. We’ll often ask “why” and see where we end up. We delve a lot in analytics, which often times gives you a great pulse of what is happening, but it’s not necessarily the end all be all. It often needs to be adjusted with, “Why is this supporting our belief or not supporting our belief?”. In a digital world, we often try to remove any human intelligence from the equation, but we disagree with that. The data never lies, but it can sure tell a fib.
