Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow

I am a huge buff on history, and when I listened to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton musical, I knew I needed to read (well, listen to) the source material. And it was amazing! I love how Chernow writes, and the little factoids throughout the book was wonderfully pleasant. Also, I recommend the musical document book, the Hamiltome (a joke, but the book is called Hamilton The Revolution).

In Ariel Levy’s “Female Chauvinist Pigs,” she talks about a particular Playboy spread that showcased female Olympians posed as sex symbols. These are some of the strongest, fastest women on earth. The modern equivalent to warriors, and in that Playboy spread, they showcase themselves in mostly the same light as a porn star. Porn is great, it is natural and porn stars are badass actors. But still, why does a female Olympian have to be sexy to be respected? Why do our female warriors have to run around in push up bras and mini skirts?.

What is the substance of the human soul? If we are to follow scientific theory, is our consciousness, the electrical impulses within the brain. Thought and instinct and choice. Therefore, when we die, our souls will degrade along with our grey matter, disintegrating into the sandy remnants of the earth.  But humanity quails at this image, that there could be no life after death, no resurrection, no grace. What is Jesus Christ but the heavenly version of a vampire? What compels us to worship such an image but the possibility that we could one day be pulled from darkness. A vampire was once human, and in some ways, is still human.   And if humanity has an immortal soul, something beyond the electricity in our brains, then a vampire would have a soul still, even one that has been corrupted and made infernal.

Love is often described in terms of life and death. We live for those we love, feel alive when we fall in love, renewed, reinvigorated, and with a lust for life. When love is lost, we are heartbroken, forced to continue on with life when a piece of ourselves is gone. You can never take back what you have given freely to one you love. And so is the fate of the knight in this story. “I saw pale kings and princes too, pale warriors, death-pale were they all.” If we are to take the poem as a cautionary tale, the warning would be to avoid such ardent, obsessive love as it will inevitably cause pain. But all love is all-consuming, at least at first. Love always leads to pain if it does not last until death.
