Hey, I just made a tumblr and put up a little video, I guess I thought it would be a good outlet for me. I kinda want online friends and people to talk to about these sort of things and have a safe space to shre my thoughts. How does someone connect with the community on here?
Hi there, and welcome to tumblr!
Just like any other social media outlet, if you want to connect with a community, you need to reach out. Find nonbinary people and blogs and follow them. Speak up when you’ve got an opinion. Send people questions or compliments or whatever off anon. Open up your inbox/messaging system. Just reach out to people and communicate with them!
The good thing about doing this on tumblr is the search feature. A few years ago, this was updated a bit from just a tags search to a general search. Now, this makes things easy to find nonbinary people and blogs (just enter “nonbinary” into the search field and you’ve got a really good start to finding nonbinary people and blogs - and once you get started, you can then experiment with other tags like “nonbinary selfie” or “autistic nonbinary” or whatever else you connect with and be able to connect with more people that way. However, there are some eccentricities to this system that are good to know. Tumblr’s search can only find the first five tags you use, so if you’re relying on tags, tag simply and wisely. Tumblr’s search will also automatically search your entire post as well, though, so if you don’t have a term tagged but did mention it in your post, then there’s still a possibility people will find your post.As well, tumblr search’s default is set to “most popular”, so change this to “most recent” if you want a better chance at finding still active blogs and blogs that might have less going on and will have more time to interact with you.
Also, you’ll want to make sure to reblog or just share original stuff on your blog. If I go to an or near empty blog, I’m immediately suspicious someone might be a spammer - or worse, a troll. Get some stuff rolling on your blog. We can get to know you by doing this, and it will help people connect with you and see if you have some similar interests.
Now if you’re looking to gain a follower base yourself, in addition to the above items, I would also suggest a few things:
Provide a video description. I noticed your video doesn’t have any description, so people aren’t going to be all too likely to click on it unless they’re bored or are really curious as to what it is. Providing a summary will help people know what the content is and potentially if it’s something they can connect with or will find relatable, which can help draw in viewers. Plus, this will help your videos show up in more searches and reach a wider base.
If you can provide captions or a transcript to your video, then d/Deaf and hoh people as well as people with any sort of auditory sensory issue will also be able to interact with you and your story.
Create regular content for your blog, especially in the beginning. If you make a video once every couple months, I’m going to easily forget about you and not be as tempted to follow you for new content.
Don’t just contact random people and ask them to watch your stuff. That’ll mostly get you blocked/reported for spam.
However, blogs like this one with a general purpose won’t mind boosting your content if asked nicely - BUT you’ll need a hook/description of your stuff and a spiel for why people might be interested in what you’re saying.
Find your voice. What is it you want to accomplish by sharing what you’re sharing? If you’re still unsure of where you stand, you’ll come off as kinda confused and all over the place and may not draw a strong base.
But basically, my advice all boils down to reaching out to others and interacting with them! Don’t just sit around and wait for people to discover you. =)
