OB/GYN Appt
I had a doctor’s appointment recently. It was quite the experience.
Firstly, when I arrived for my appointment, I found the waiting room to be BEYOND full!!!! There had to be at least 50 people in a 10′ x 12′ room!!!! I felt like a sardine! Needless to say, my social anxiety was on HIGH ALERT!!! As I looked around the room, I noted that many of the occupants were related, and I wondered, “when did a trip to the OB/GYN become a family affair?” I get having your mom and sister come to your first Obstetrics appointment, but your grandparents and aunts and uncles??? So bizarre!!!!
During my appointment, I decided to approach the topic of a hysterectomy to eliminate my many gynecological issues (a story for another day). I explained that I did not want children and haven’t wanted them for over 5 years. The reaction that I got from my doctor is exactly the reaction I always get when I share that I want to remain child-free- that confused look that has a hint of judgement, as if I was some kind of pariah. It really made the whole appointment feel like a part of the great battle between breeders and non-breeders.
Lastly, although I have been suffering from much pain and irregularity for an extended period of time, I was told yet again that everything “looks fine.” Those are some of the most frustrating words ever! Although those words should be comforting, they only make me feel lost and disheartened to not know the cause of my distress, and thus, not know how to alleviate it.

Babies...
I really don't understand it when parents of very young infants say, "I want you to come meet the baby!" Why? Do you really think the child will have any recollection of our meeting? What am I supposed to get out of it? It's not like I can ask him who his favourite bands and artists are. It's just a little blob at that point, who is not really capable of an interaction. A more accurate statement would be, "Come look at my baby and tell me it's cute. I need validation of my choice to breed."
