I got this tattoo last year to commemorate being with Jonny for twenty years. Jonny doesn’t like tattoos, but I do, so in many respects this tattoo is symbolic of our relationship. We’ve been through a lot as individuals and as a couple. The sparrows represent our loyalty, and the hearts our love. None of the four images is touching the other, but are mirrored pairs. This aspect represents that we are whole people who are with each other wholly. There have been times of codependency that we have, by this point, worked through pretty well, if imperfectly, but we aren’t perfect. It’s scary to allow someone you love and need so much to go out and be their own person, but Jonny has done this for me during the past 11 years of my recovery journey. He is a brave person, not only for that, but also for being with me. I’m not an easy person in any respect. I am pretty and funny and smart, so that helps a lot. Jonny is tremendously complicated in his own way, and I’ve grown to unexpectedly and immensely respect that about him. Jonny has also grown so much as an individual during the time we’ve been together. He may not have had much of a choice in the matter, but he’s done it. You know how people who have been together for a long time say that love grows deeper and stronger over time? Well, it’s true. The very meaning of love has become so much more complex and sophisticated and integrated into who I am as Jonny’s partner. This year has been so hard on both of us in different ways.
