Kiyomi Haunterly Redesign (I hope we get her in g3)

In g1, Kiyomi being a Nopperabō was more of a cosmetic aspect to her character so I decided to really lean into the yokai influence. She’s a bit of a prankster but it’s all in good fun. She doesn’t wanna traumatize anyone. I wish there were more yokai in MH. (´-ω-`)

"The Faceless"

In Satisfying Afterburn lore, The Faceless are Nopperabō ¹. The girl who Wednesday has a bad habit of crashing into, Mishizu Herz, is a half-Japanese, half-German Nopperabō whose Outcast powers are supernaturally empathetic, reflecting the heart of who she physically and mentally encounters on her face, for however long or brief (depending on the strength of the preoccupation). In Outcast society, they tend to make good law enforcement officers/work well with the investigative justice system* since their powers are objective. They can't help or manipulate who they 'face'; it's something like a temporary possession by the emotional image projected by the other person. Still, Norminal society has a deep distrust of shapeshifting Outcasts, so there are few Nopperabō at higher levels of government.

*And thus, in the future there will be some more interesting interactions between ABW and Mishizu.

Random Fact: The Noppera-bō originated in Edo period (1603-1867) where it emerged as a staple of Japanese ghost story collections known as the kaidan. The Noppera-bō is a harmless trickster. The Recurrent Spookings being a victim encountering a distressed stranger (often being a crying woman) and when they reveal their face the victim will run and find a second person who will ask, “did they look like this?” Before revealing their blank face.

My sona, Karma, is half Nopperabō- half Banshee

Nopperabō are shapeshifting Japanese yokai that usually take on the appearance of a man or woman, but they have no face. They like go play pranks by scaring others.

Banshees are tragic spirits of Irish mythology. They are often very ghastly and frightening in appearance, their shrieks and cries terrorizing mortals at night.

My bf’s sona is a Nagual, a shapeshifting guardian from Central American mythology.

There are many different interpretations, but in this instance, Naguals are guardian spirits that inhabit particular people that sometimes come out in order to keep their mortal body and others safe.

Usually these animals are sacred symbols of ancient Aztec canon, but they sometimes aren’t. In this case, Xavi can turn into a jackal if he calls upon that said spirit.

However, the illusion is quickly shattered when met face-to-face, as a nopperabō actually has no face at all. Its head is a blank orb with no eyes, nose, mouth, or features of any kind. INTERACTIONS: This mysterious yokai is encountered on quiet, empty roads late at night when nobody else is around. Its main activity seems to be scaring humans, which it does remarkably well. They usually appear in the guise of a man or a woman with his or her back turned towards the observer. When approached, the yokai turns around and reveals its terrifying true form, reveling in the terror it inflicts upon its unsuspecting victim. To maximize the effect, they often appear with a face at first, and then wipe their face off dramatically with their hand at the most opportune time.
