"Sole Searching with Solefrito”
The home team has done it again!
Since their inception in 2004, Commonwealth events have always been the perfect place to gauge your style and network with cool people. Their 3rd annual Summer Picnic at O’Connor Brewing Company was no different. There was food trucks, free Red Bulls (thanks), beautiful women, great tasting beer, and fly footwear. Did I mention beautiful women? Seeing how the setting was a brewery located in the cut and I mean IN THE CUT of an industrial lot in Norfolk, I didn’t know what to expect. I always judge events by the footwear it attracts. Diversity was the main attraction and I loved it.
To my hearts content there was only a few sprinkles of Jordans. Im used to the over saturation of the Jumpman logo, but the clear king of the concrete was Vans. At least 60% of the crowd proudly rocked The Sk8 Hi and Lo mainly in the white on black color way. Didn’t matter if they were fresh out the box or complete with war wounds they stuck out amongst the brand giants. Of course the classic silhouettes like Superstars, Chucks, and AF1s made their appearances, but they were definitely outnumbered by the legendary skate brand. The Adidas NMD made three cameos. They do look comfortable as hell and Im glad they’ve been selling out with no celebrity/athlete endorsements.
I rocked some brown Puma Suedes reminiscent of Tim Meadows outfit in The Ladies Man. Speaking of ladies, they clearly outdid the men as far as fresh goes this time around. Extra shout out to the beautiful young lady who did the Commonwealth x Asics “Da Vinci” release great justice.
Now Asics is a sneaker sleeper, I haven’t seen that many rocked at an event EVER. They’re really having a presence in the streets that I haven’t seen in years. From the colorways, the materials, and overall look I love what the brand is doing. I must admit the surprise of the occasion was seeing The Creeper by Rhianna in person. Being a supporter of the iconic brand, I thought Puma was just cashing in by collaborating with the pop icon, but after seeing them in action… they’re really dope. The even awesome-er (I know thats not a word) part was the four ladies who rocked them, all had different colorways and each one looked even better than the next. Its definitely a good look for the ladies, and I want to apologize for pre judging this sneaker.
The day was filled with great vibes, great DJ sets by Sosupersam and Gents & Jawns, a great performance by Opal Dillard, and great people. Another win for the 757. Special thanks to Eric, Commonwealth, O’Connors Brewery, and that one big cloud that blocked the sun every so often. PEACE!

1: Cooling towers, take me home.
I know I’m nearly home when I start to see the cooling towers of energy plants. That’s when the smirk spreads across my face and I sink into the driver’s seat knowing I’m halfway there. The impressively endless plains of the South are behind me and the more characteristic hills of the industrious North are up ahead.
Upon a spontaneous decision to leave a day prematurely I loaded up the car. There’s something strange about seeing your entire life’s possessions easily slotted into the back of a vehicle within 10 minutes. But it’s nice. It’s efficient. It’s simple. Which is what this journey is all about.
After a 20 mile detour deeper into the Norfolk Broadlands to thank a landlord/landlady couple who had taken me under their wing recently, I commenced the journey up the spine of England. A journey I usually detest but this time found oddly peaceful. No deadlines. No pressure. No enemies. No headaches. No exams. No worries. BBC Radio 4′s documentaries on satanic rituals and painfully false detective dramas were very welcome.
It was weird to have a full three lane motorway to myself for miles at a time, like visiting Medieval ruins that you know were once a bustling hive but are now forgotten.
I am struggling with the idea of this blog. Most great sights will be seen from behind a wheel where it is both dangerous and illegal to use a camera. Pulling over to photograph every sight will also make my progress somewhat mollusc-like, especially as I inevitably obsessively photograph everything from roadkill-of-the-week to cloud formations that bring a lump to your throat. What about video diaries? I can’t do something so narcissistic. A book? I can’t knowingly do something that’s such a waste of time. Facebook updates? Defeats the purpose of being alone. Yet it would be truly criminal to do something so potentially awesome without sharing or documenting it in some form. So a good friend of mine recommended Tumblr. And here we are. It appears even I cannot completely deactivate one’s human social instinct.
First, a week at home preparing and seeing the family. Come back soon.
