No Longer a Warrior Motel September 2019 Digital photograph . . We want to be in control of our image. But what do you do when you have to modify your image to make a living? What do you do when that modified image only helps for a short period of time? The Warrior Motel is just one example of many in Cherokee where our image was modified to help our tourism economy. While it may seem like a harmless, rotting building on the side of the road on Highway 19, it is one of many reminders of what became of the Cherokee homeland and how quickly it was chewed up and spat back out by a changing tourism economy. The use of the "savage warrior" imagr to advertise a place to sleep, to "experience the smokies," giving any visitor the expectation that they are in a "new and unexplored" area - this and more give outsiders a very skewed view on what Cherokee actually is. . .
