Contempt.
It was all the emotion Brendan held towards the ominous mountain east of Lilycove City. That thrice accursed place was to him nothing more than a reminder of something long lost, something which many others had the chance to enjoy, and that he was forever denied. To him, Mount Pyre was a symbol of enmity, and even dread.
So why did he continue to return?
Even as the young trainer stood before his mother's tombstone, Brendan knew the answer to that recurring question, in all spite of his loathing of it. Kneeling down, he placed a single white rose in the vase by the stone's foundation, uttering a short prayer for the repose of her spirit. "...I hope wherever you are, it's better than this damnable place..."
Usually, only Pokemon were buried on the grounds of Mount Pyre, and yet his mother had requested to be laid to rest alongside them before her death years ago. If there was any reason stated for it, the only man alive who knew was his father, and when his son asked for an explanation, silence was his only answer.
In the light fog in the distance, Brendan could hear the faint whispers of the Ghost type Pokemon who haunted the mount, and decided it was best to leave the dead to their rest. He figured that they had given him more than enough time to visit his mother's final resting place. Turning to leave, he strode down the path towards Mount Pyre's exit, when he noticed another figure materializing out of the mists, only instead of a Pokemon, this one was human.
Tensing up ever so slightly, lest it be a mere apparition or prank from the ghosts, Brendan kept his cool and decided to address the newcomer. "The spirits grow restless. I'd advise against coming further in, whoever you are."
