BITCH IM DRUNK
send asks 😘
Alright, friends
Let’s have a little real talk, shall we?
I want to talk to you about the concepts of investment and entitlement.
Let’s start with their dictionary definitions.
(I had no idea about the second definition, that’s so fucking cool man, does that mean if you’re besieging a city you’re investing in it? Shit dude that’s cool)
Anyway we’re focusing on definition 1.3:
an act of devoting time, effort, or energy to a particular undertaking with the expectation of a worthwhile result.
Some real world examples:
You may invest time, emotions and energy in another person to receive the worthwhile result of a friend
You may invest time, energy, effort and emotion into a baby to receive the worthwhile result of having brought up a good person.
You may invest money, likes, reblogs, fanart, etc. into an artist, writer, or other content creator to receive the worthwhile result of more content you will enjoy.
Now let’s look at entitlement:
If you have an entitlement to something, you have a right to receive it no matter what anyone else may say.
Some real world examples:
A human being is entitled to food, shelter and clean water
A person with a disability which affects their life in some way is entitled to an amount of disability benefit (on a case by case basis)
Are we all on the same page? Good. Now let’s talk about them when it comes to the art world; and more specifically, the online artist community.
Sometimes, an artist may draw art for another person. There are many reasons for this.
The artist could be close friends with the recipient; the gift art, in very blunt and impersonal terms, is an investment towards the other person’s friendship.
The artist could be a fan or follower of the recipient; the fanart is a direct investment towards the person noticing and/or becoming friends with the artist.
The recipient may have won a giveaway; they made an uncertain investment in the form of likes, reblogs, or other entry methods and were rewarded by winning and receiving art.
The recipient directly commissioned the artist; the recipient made a direct monetary investment for the result of a piece of art that was worth their money.
There are a load of other reasons and a lot of reasons are personal to the artist and recipient involved; these four are the ones I could think of off the top of my head.
There’s one thing in common between all of these methods, though; they all involve an investment on the part of the artist or recipient.
So from this, we can gather that art is something that requires investment; without investment there is no art in any form.
Let’s put that statement aside for a second and come back to it later.
Next, let’s examine entitlement; specifically entitlement to art.
First, ask yourself a question; is recieving art a right?
To answer, let’s look at the declaration of human rights.
Here’s a link to an abbreviated version of the universal declaration of human rights; >x<
But as a TL;DR; receipt of art is not included anywhere.
Therefore, we can assume that receiving personalised artwork is not an essential for human life; it is a luxury.
What’s a luxury, you may ask?
An inessential, desireable item which is expensive or difficult to obtain.
Common sense then suggests that, regardless of how much you may believe it, you are not entitled to luxuries, as they are both expensive and difficult to obtain. They are treats; once in a while indulgences that require an investment, AKA money, time or effort, to obtain.
So if we bring back the phrase we stashed away earlier:
‘art is something that requires investment; without investment there is no art in any form.’
We can add to it:
Art is a luxury and therefore not an entitlement; as a luxury is something that requires investment, without investment there is no art in any form.
Which brings me to the real subject of today’s real talk: begging.
(Specifically begging for artwork.)
Congrats if you’ve read this far, by the way.
Free art is a rare occurence. It occurs when enough of an investment has been made on the part of the artist or recipient for a return to be given.
If an artist is not invested in you or your content, there will be no art given to you.
Regardless of your monetary situation, artistic talent, or love of the artist,
If an artist is not invested in you or your content, there will be no art given to you for free.
So please, before you send a message to an artist you love asking if they’ll ‘just draw this’, or make a vague post on tumblr dot com about how you’d love for a piece of art to be drawn but alas do not have the skill and if only an artist will draw it for you, consider the above.
Are you entitled to a free piece of art? No.
Is the artist invested in you or your character?
If not you may consider making an investment by offering money, AKA commissioning the artist.
Because that’s the only way you’ll get a piece of art from an artist not invested in you.
And begging for free art will only make matters worse by annoying the artist and making them less likely to want to be invested in you.
Got all that?
Alright.
Good talk.

I'm preparing
With all the interruption and conversations that has happened today...I am once again afraid. Afraid that you'll be gone. Just cause you can't handle how my parents are. I don't blame you and I certainly don't blame them. I blame myself. So I'm here trying to THINK trying to not get my feelings in the way. Trying to raise my dignity and pride above my desire to beg for you to stay. No. I would not do that. I am not a child anymore. I would not beg. NO. But I will wish and hope and pray ridiculously for your existence to continue to be a part of my life. Cause I'm here. Being a fool for you. Being in love with you.
