You've heard of parallel play, now get ready for perpendicular play.
Hot cross buns?

people NEED to stop gatekeeping making music like ohhhh i don’t have an instrument ohhhhh i don’t know music theory ohhhhh i’m not gonna pay for some program. SHUT UP. take my hand.
you need NONE of that shit!!!!! there’s a website called beepbox.co. literally all you have to do is press things until it sounds a modicum of nice. it’s easy it’s free and it works on anything which has a browser because it’s a website.
if even ONE person starts making music bc of this post it will be worth it.
making bad music is just as important and okay as it is to write badly or draw badly or sing badly. you AREN’T BEHOLDEN TO MAKE GOOD MUSIC. making music is not utilitarian HAVE FUN. HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!
love how people will encourage people to just start making shit and see what happens when it comes to drawing and writing but when it comes to beginner musicians (music makers if you wish to be less formal) it’s just COMPLETE RADIO SILENCE. it feels like no one even knows you MAKE music it just sprouts up from the ground one day and some guy picks it up. am i alone in this dark cave
Fuck it
I'm gonna try and make music
Call me betovan bc I'm deaf as fuck /j
HELL YEAH!!!
Alternatively if you wanna get into music producing in a more “proper” way, you still don’t need any money.
Ableton has excellent free websites to learn the basics:
Learning Music
Learning Synths
You can learn basically everything you need on YouTube. I recommend:
Mercurial Tones Academy
Dan Worrall
Bthelick
A lot of your favorite artists, mainly in electronic music, likely have done track breakdowns, you can watch those to learn how they do things.
DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) ultimately all do the same things, and Cakewalk is a great FREE fully fledged one. Sure it has some issues, and doesn’t have many plugins included, but it works just fine. All the music I released so far was made there, before I made the jump to Ableton.
As for VST plugins:
Vital is an excellent free synth
Native Instruments Komplete Start is a good free collection of plugins
TDR Nova is a great free EQ
There’s a lot of others and I don’t wanna name everything I’m aware of here, but feel free to DM me for more (Or if you have any other questions and stuff too).
And as for samples, you can get a bunch of free ones at:
Cymatics
Ghosthack
Having good headphones is nice and what I’d recommend you invest in first once it comes to it, but even your current ones will probably be fine, mainly if you slap AutoEQ onto them to flatten the frequency response. And ultimately, music isn’t all about the mixing, the most important part is conveying an emotion.
I know this goes against the spirit of the original post a little, but I want people to know that getting into music production also no longer costs thousands, you can just do it at home on your computer without no money.
Yeah, there is still quite the learning curve, I get that, though it’s also why it’s managed to hold me as a hobby for so long.
I do however have something of the exact opposite variety too, the most simple way to make music I know of, and a wonderful little semi-social experience, along the lines of the game Journey:
The New PLINK! is the long overdue update of #plink by @DinahmoeSTHLM. Jam with friends and strangers all over the world.
hi op i think you should know that i did indeed make a song for the first time because of this

it bothers me that you often don't really hear about people having a "favorite album" the way they might have a favorite movie or favorite video game
fuck it. reblog this and tell me in the tags what your favorite album is
fun fact not known to most Americans when they mock us for having deadly heatwaves: ninety percent of the British population live further north than ninety percent of Canadians.
Embarrassing fact about me is that it took me so so long to be able to tell Ross Bryant and Grant O'Brien apart. I'm sorry guys you're both tall white dudes with similar-sounding names and very very similar voices. I would just wait for the first sex joke or Shakespeare reference.
I feel better now because everyone in the notes is like "yeah same".
Every day I receive further vindication
They’re a bit Schrödinger’s white man, I think you have to make a Shakespeare reference or say something wrong about a rollercoaster and fix the superposition before you proceed
I was fully prepared to be all whiny "c'mon stop being racist" about this but.
...
...those are the same fucking guy my man
I understand that from a glance, one could denote a similar look from both pictures. However, from a close examination, almost every feature on the two indivuals are different.
Feature/Left/Right
Nose/is thinner/is wider
Eyes/blue and wider/brown and smaller
Ears/bigger/smaller
Lips/fuller/thinner
Eyebrows/thicker/ thinner
Chin/has divot/no divot
Glasses/ both different colors
These pics are taken at different angles under different lighting. When you see them moving around on a consistently lit stage, they're a lot harder to tell apart until you learn to recognise the difference in their voices.
And also the things they’re doing on those stages are high energy gremlin improv for challenges devised by comedic mad geniuses who would be horror villains if this wasn’t consensual with guard rails. It’s hard the differentiate the width of a gangly white man’s nose while flailing like a puppet.
They need to do an episode of Game Changer pitting Ross and Grant against each other on bizarre challenges but using someone completely physically opposite to them as a control - maybe Anna Garcia or Lily Du
The baggage does not excuse the action.
Spoilers for TADC ep9 below.
I know this is kind of a hot take but I think creating a religious ethnostate is bad
I actually think it is still bad even if it is a religious ethnostate for a highly oppressed ethnicity and religion. I just don’t think it’s a good idea
Zionists keep showing up to say that Hamas wants to found a religious ethnostate like I did not just say that religious ethnostates are bad. I also think that some members of a certain ethnic and cultural group wanting to found a religious ethnostate is not justification for the genocide of an entire people. I also think genocide is very bad.
Accidentally bought my cat cantrip instead of catnip and now she’s casting eldritch blast at me from the overlook of her cat tree while demanding wet food only
will be thinking about this probably for the rest of the week
I honestly think that nonbinary people should be allowed to be mean* about our genders without getting shit for it more often.
*(Read: Assertive of our boundaries and stood firm on the fact that our identities are deserving of respect)
We should be allowed to make a sour face or take a cold tone with someone when they carelessly misgender us for the fifth time in a row despite multiple corrections. We should be allowed to complain about erasure and ask where our needs and experiences come into play when we hear people reinforcing binary normativity in their discussions of gender related issues. We should be allowed to be visibly/audibly angry with other trans people when they try to forcibly categorize us as fem or masc, or imply that our enbyness is a mere phase that will eventually lead to "real/full" (binary to binary) transition.
Nonbinary people should be allowed to take our identities seriously and expect others to do the same for us, regardless of whether or not we will come off as mean for doing so. Because quite frankly, upon seeing how exorsexist the world has become recently, I think we haven't been mean enough.
