why dis 🧊 thought dating with debra would get him closer to dexter.

We see Dexter's thoughts about every character that's important to the plot, but before Dexter realized that Rudy is ITK, there are no lines from Dexter about him. (though its probably for the audience, so that we don't suspect Rudy.)

But in any case, Dexter didn't feel any close connection with Brian until the very last episode.

You don't give up on your normal life that you worked so hard to build 5 minutes after finding out that your sister's good boyfriend is your brother.

Dexter is too slow in processing such feelings quickly. Should've spend energy getting to know Dexter and leave a lasting impression (like Lila did).
