the tragedy of adam watching shiro rise to meteoric levels of fame and becoming this like superhero figure at the garrison and watching as shiro gets more and more caught up in maintaining that status for the sake of people who look up to him and also because his missions and morals necessitate him doing so. and then this slowly progresses into shiro going on blatantly dangerous trips until of course the ill-fated kerberos mission and adam's just so tired and sick with worry and he's like i cannot do this anymore. and they break up and then shit goes wrong, so wrong, and adam's left believing that the last thing he'll have ever done with shiro is breaking up with him. and there's this cold, ugly, bitter "i-told-you-so" thought in the back of his mind that he cannot help clinging onto as a way to cope against the unimaginable sadness he feels at the whole situation. i fully believe the first thing adam does when he sees shiro again is slap him across the face LOL
