Minecraft v. SecondLife
Before I begin, I must admit that I have a strong bias towards Minecraft than with Secondlife. Growing up, I found myself playing with legos and k’nex all the time. When I got to video games I found god-mode and open worlds to be my jam. Minecraft is the best of both worlds. On the surface, Minecraft is a pixelated grinder that is for little kids. What many people dont recognize is the unlimited possibilities with minecraft. To start, it most certainly is for kids. It builds every fundamental, from math and geometry to problem solving. Creativity is the only way to survive. Ask anyone who has not played before to last one night in Minecraft and 2/3 of them will die. Beyond that is how opensource it is. Mods and skins dominate this game. I have seen working computers built within the game, entire worlds built and anything you could ever want. The interaction with others can be however you want it to be. Battle others, build with them and survive. Its all there. The biggest factor is the price. One time fee of 30 bucks and you get it for life. To reference an incredible book, Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, Minecraft is just like the Oasis. Free for all to explore and dream.
SecondLife on the other hand is what the Six0rs would turn Minecraft into. A terrifying world where everything costs money and corporations run the scene. Although the game itself is free, money is vital to accomplishing anything. With that said, there is most certainly a draw for an older crowd to secondlife who want to crate a life in the virtual world. Sex plays a major role in this game. Anyone can look like whoever and whatever they want and be able to have sex with whoever and whatever they please. This isnt to say its all fetishes and creepers. May people have created lucrative businesses in this world. For example I remember reading about a guy who built a massive club and sold it for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Still though, you cant go 5 feet without running into either a racist, a nude person or someone trying to sell you something illegal.
