Kiki the Kitten and the Tiny Squeak <3

@notgonnagetus, thank you for the ask. It made me laugh!

‘Kiki the Kitten’ is the first story (a children’s story) I’ve ever written when I was 12. It has remained undisturbed in my WIP folder for 16 years (I just dated myself there). Until, that is, today, for the sake of science. 

Kiki wants to sing, but she’s very young to start singing lessons. She visits the Lark in the forest and begs to learn, but the Lark says no. Kiki studies all the music she can, so that she’d know the songs once she was old enough to start studying voice (this sounds eerily like my childhood). 

Kiki’s first recital comes around, and she’s nervous. All the forest creatures are gathered in the glen, waiting for the show to start. Kiki takes a breath, opens her mouth... and the tiniest squeak escapes. That’s all. Just a squeak. And she’s mortified. But the creatures are understanding and supportive, and she learns there’s nothing to be afraid of, and Kiki tries again, and succeeds in singing. General rejoicing ensues. Cake may or may not be involved.

So.... yeah. That’s that story.
