Book Review: “Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea” by Barbara Demick

First off let me say that this book was so captivating. I felt as though I was transported into North Korea as a fly on the wall. I have seen many documentaries about North Korea but none of them capture the horror and truth as much as this book does. This book entails stories of survival and an in depth look at the psychological condition of the North Korean people. These people are strong. This book certainly shows socialism gone wrong. Way wrong. I do not want to give too much away because I want you to read it for yourself.

I certainly hope that one day all of North Korea is free. Free from the evil that has haunted them for generations.

I would give this book a 9/10.

Leader of Betrayal

in the second half of Nothing To Envy we start to realize that life is precious and short. With remarkable detail, Demick brings to life what it means to be living under the most repressive totalitarian regime in the world today. (NothingToEnvy.com) There are so many lessons to be learned from this book that creating valuable qualities come easily.  In a world ruled by Kim Il-sung, living your life was like repeating your day with no way to move forward being one of the reasons for many teenagers to “date.”  There was a lack of food causing starvation and people left to suffer.   Later in the book, they were able to escape which is another valuable lesson I feel they’ve learned.

Nothing To Envy (End)

In the ending of Nothing To Envy we see that life for many North Koreans begin to fall apart.  People begin to change their ways and yet, still believe that Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-il will always be the leaders.  In the beginning of the book Mrs. Song is very faithful to tradition, as we get further into the book she begins to unravel her life, her morals, her identity. With everything that is going on in North Korea, from the famine, to loss of jobs, and the death of Kim Il-Sung, I understand more or less the pain and suffering that she is going through.  I see it a lot even in America.  Women see themselves as of higher value and do deserve the equal respect as given to men.  Even though women today are in positions that men normally posses, they still are not looked to as equal in many scenarios.
