for ship opinions: staged dorks

man okay i have gone on A Lot about this ship bc i put a lot of heart into christine and jeremy as characters and i am very defensive of their dynamic, at least in the 3.0 incarnation.

bc like okay i can def see people brushing it off as a one-sided love story esp in 1.0, and maybe see christine as a manic pixie dream girl and/or something for jeremy to attain and save, and some lines i feel could be better regarding that idea. but i think that when you look deeper into the script, jeremy is good for christine.

because jeremy, despite all his issues overcoming it, owns and admits to his insecurity and depression in a way christine doesn’t, because she tends to deflect or downplay her issues, instead trying to reach out to others through theater, and it comes across like she thinks admitting that she “wants things to be easy” makes her selfish. him matter-of-factly telling her that’s normal in VIMH is really important for her to hear. i wish more people acknowledged her insecurities (because we clearly see she’s socially awkward and even bullied like jeremy is) and how jeremy helps her, just as much as she helps him shamelessly embrace his weirdness. jeremy admits to his depression while repressing his weirdness, while christine admits to her weirdness while repressing her depression, which is a good parallel. (michael also has a very similar arc but i think it’s more obvious with him; christine gets brushed off more often).

christine is very empathetic and compassionate, even before she gets to know jeremy she’s constantly worried when he seems nervous, and is the only person to help him in the mall after he freaks out. i think this might, admittedly, cause some complication, because she also tends to feel so hard for others that it depresses her and she blames herself, like after the fire with rich and jake. however, jeremy also obviously cares about her, and wants her to express herself rather than bottle up her feelings, so i don’t think he’d let her drive herself nuts over him. and he’d probably do the same to her, lol. it’d just be a cycle of “no please don’t worry about me, you’re the one who’s struggling!” and they have to both deal with their empathy issues and just boost each other up :)

also i like to think jeremy genuinely cares about her art, i mean if you watch ILPR (particularly the wrol/steph ones) he is just enthralled with her, and obviously he does listen to her in 3.0 with their clever “bowling alley performance art” change, and that’s why he knows her well enough to identify when the squip sets her off, and her autonomy is so important to him (because it’s important to her, as she ranted at him for assuming she would ever want a squip, because jeremy’s arc involves realizing not everyone with insecurities wants to change what makes them unique) that he risks himself to save her, which is a point everyone makes but it’s important.

i also like to think jeremy is genuinely interested in theater (which is canon to the book) because his interest in the play comes before christine even shows up, so i like to think they both can indulge in acting together, and jeremy genuinely likes learning about new things, and christine is a good teacher, i think it’s just therapeutic for them both as jeremy embraces this outlet and christine gets to infodump :)

which leads me to my point that they’re both Very Autistic Coded (and ADHD coded- hell in christine’s case it’s outright canon) and they both really get each other on that front... both know how it feels to get super into something and want to share but nobody ever seems to listen, and how social interactions are practically a chore, but they can just be themselves around each other. and while michael is great i think he struggles to be patient with jeremy (which is something that can be worked out between them; i'm not putting down that ship and i love it too) while i think christine is more capable of understanding how it feels to put on a face for other people, though she does it in a slightly different way.

i once spent Many hours trying to hash out a coherent / consistent deh timeline and it genuinely felt like steven and val and i were all standing in a room pointing guns at one another. (the final result takes some serious liberties with the text.) didn't even bother trying that hard for location, just picked rochester and ran with it.

man, when you really try and figure out and put dates/days for scenes, it really is obvious how Evan just has Schrodinger’s broken arm that stays broken for as long as canon wills it, like ok, act 1 is over about 2-3 weeks and act 2 (exlcuding finale) is just under 3 weeks ( the screen behind lana and ev when the letter gets released says 2 days left for the kickstarter) 

but then it’s implied by Evan at the start of act 2 that it’s been at least a week if not more since the speech (”thanks for checking out the awesome new videos we put out this week with Mr and Mrs Murphy”) and Larry says in the scene where Heidi’s there for dinner that “Evan’s been a great source of comfort these last few months”

BUT

the way Jared comments on Evan’s cast being gone in sincerely me reprise implies that it’s only recently come off, maybe in the last few days, so like??????????

as far as I can tell from my dash, the only characters are winston, taylor, winton's boy and girl best friends, the woman taylor made out with, and axe, but he only exists to have just left the show. it's all about these characters alone committing an infinite amount of white collar crimes while being called undeserving insults and slowly self-actualizing. actually I lied there's one more character and he's called mafee, and he's usually a cool dude but he recently made a real cringe move and nobody liked that.
