Inspired by this post here about drawing skin tones (thanks @1nsecticidal) - the wording reminded me a lot of my OC Matt and then later NotMatt, who, due to being an undead nosferatu, is not Matt anymore. "Yay, this character is alive!" "This one is not :( "

We're doing Harriet's attitude towards Matt before and after...

Before:

At last, the telepathy scientist spoke: “Who survived?” Harriet, who had been expecting a plan to break the thrall curse, was a little taken aback. “What do you mean?” “The fall of the Institute – they said everyone had turned into zombies, who survived?” “Well… I’m not sure. Haven’t seen a list of who is a zombie and who isn’t.” Matt gave her an odd look. “Do you know if anyone in the telepathy department got out? Rick? Charlie? Cassy?” “Um… no, I didn’t check.” “Harry?!” He seemed surprised and… hurt? Harriet felt awkward and tried to explain herself – “Well, they were more your friends, not mine, and because I already knew you were Giles’ thrall, there wasn’t really anyone I wanted to check on, I just wanted to stay focussed on the mission: catching vampires and saving you.” “You didn’t even check if Dessa was okay?!” ... “Harry, are you honestly saying you forgot to check which of our friends are dead, because you didn’t care?” “I had more pressing things to deal with! When we get back to town we can visit the Institute and check!” Matt crumpled a little. “What if they’re all dead…?”

After:

Harriet knew it wasn’t really him, that Matt had died and this was a vampire, but when she saw him her resolve crumbled a little. “I’m sorry,” she said. Matt’s face frowned at her. “I’m sorry,” she repeated. “I should have looked after you better. After everything you did for me, the telepathy blocker, being my boyfriend all those years… I barely cared. And I care now. You’re dead now, but I do care, Matt, and I am sorry that it took you dying to make me realise I’ve been… horrible…” The vampire in Matt’s body looked at her. “I don’t know you,” said Matt’s voice simply. “I don’t remember much. I cannot accept your apology if I have no idea what you did, sorry.”

The key difference between Matt and NotMatt is Matt has a PhD and is Dr O'Neill while NotMatt is just Mr O'Neill

Unless he takes his surname from the vampire who aired him... In which case we will have Dr Matthew O'Neill and Mr Matthew Gilesspawn?

who is NotMatt?

Well. :) I can tell you who he isn't! He is definitely not Matt!!!

I tend not to talk about NotMatt very much on the blog because he's part of a major spoiler. If you don't mind spoilers, click 'keep reading'...

So at the halfway point at the story we have our first character death. Matt tries to become a vampire to escape a scary situation, and 'becoming a vampire' in Bloodmood means dying. No one can actually become a vampire. Your body, after you die, can be a vampire, but the 'you' bit is dead forever. So Matt dies. He's gone, he's dead, and his body gets up and starts walking and talking, and that's NotMatt.

Confusingly, NotMatt does answer to 'Matt', he hasn't known any other name and is not interested in changing it. People see his face and say "MATT?! WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU?!?! WHY ARE YOU A SCARY DEAD GUY WITH FANGS?!" and he's like "yup that's my name Matt"
