“You ever jump on top of a grenade?”
“Actually, I have. Four times. It’s a thing I do with my helmet, it’s a reinforced helmet--”
This dialogue ticks me off (as do most things that Walker says), because it’s so misleading, and just... changes the meaning of the question. He says he has a reinforced helmet that he ‘does a thing’ with, presumably putting the helmet on top of the grenade to keep it from shooting shrapnel everywhere. Sound familiar?
[Picture from Civil War, depicts Steve covering a grenade with his shield]
Steve does the same thing in Romania when the SHIELD agents come for Bucky.
But Bucky didn’t ask because of that. He asked because of this.
This right here, is Steven Grant Rogers, shielding people from a grenade with his own body without a second thought. He sacrifices himself on instinct, because he is willing to give his life to save someone. No armor, no shield, no special helmet. It’s just Steve.
Sure, Walker is a decorated war hero. But we don’t know that he would do that.
It’s a throwaway line that probably won’t be brought up again, and maybe it doesn’t impact the story arc as a whole. But it’s interesting.
P.S. Sam Wilson would absolutely jump on a grenade “‘cause that’s what heroes do.”
