Notocactus warasii (Parodia warasii)

This clumping cactus comes from the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brasil. It is related to the more commonly grown Notocactus magnificus (Parodia magnifica), but has a more bristly appearance. It has been proposed that this species (along with all of those in Notocactus) be placed in Parodia, considerably enlarging that genus, but there are also arguments based on DNA evidence that this expanded concept of Parodia is not monophyletic. As with so many taxonomic questions in the Cactus Family, we will have to wait and see where the evidence takes us, but at the Ruth Bancroft Garden we are sticking with the old name Notocactus warasii until the picture is clearer.

Parodia magnifica. When I got this plant it was labeled Notocactus magnificus which World Flora Online considers an "ambiguous" name though it appears to be the preferred name among hobby cactus growers. I put it outside last summer and I'm guessing that it liked that because this is the first time it has flowered for me. You can, however, see the damage cause by a violent hailstorm that is not uncommon here in Colorado. Parodia magnifica is native to Brazil.
