The Simien Mountains: Definitely a must-see attraction, when traveling to Ethiopia! Even though the weather wasn’t perfect, I really enjoyed this hike and think that 3 days is a good choice, when traveling during rainy season. Half of the group only stayed for one night, and after the first day I wished I’d booked the same. But eventually I was glad I didn’t, as they really missed out on the best parts! After a foggy morning hike, we arrived at the first view point of the day, the Jinbar Falls. When the fog is so dense that you can’t see the valley, there’s no reason to be afraid of heights 🤷‍♂️ Day 1 of the hike was quite disappointing as you literally couldn’t see anything but the trail and I almost started to regret my decision to come here during rainy season. Eventhough it’s still rainy season in Northern Ethiopia 🌧 I definitely wanted to see the Simien Mountains and booked a 3 days / 2 nights trip with a local operator. Normally I’m not a big fan of guided group hiking trips, but the circumstances in the Amhara region require you to be accompanied by a guard and hence the group trip was the more affordable option for me (still quite expensive). After a 2 hours drive from Gonder, we arrived at the starting point and already got soaking wet 💦 while waiting for everybody to get ready.
