Written for @flashfictionfridayofficial prompt 175, Gloomy Daze and writer's write November 4th prompt, search.
They have to look, to search for that, that was unknown. The map wasn’t clear. Their mission is though. It has been for many years.
He looks over it, marking on the old map, where they have already searched. She looks over his shoulder. “Not much more.”
“I really wish you wouldn’t do that.”
She smirks, knowing it agitates him. It is why she does it. “The fact remains, there isn’t much more to search.”
“No,” he agrees. “We are closing in onto whatever we are meant to find.”
The map simply has an X on it. The legend simply states, ' Gloomy Daze'. Why they are digging holes all over the countryside is more complex. They had been told, by their parents, that it is important that this secret, the secret behind the strange legend, be found.
“Shall we brother?” He raises and picks up a shovel. They return to digging. It isn’t long until they hit something. Looking at each other, they stop and kneel, moving carefully to uncover it.
Soil is carefully brushed away. A gasp from her. A box, the lid has written across it, ‘Gloomy Daze,” in old fashioned calligraphy.
“Oh my.” Her voice is faint.
“Yeah.” He moves enough dirt to lift it out. They both stare at the old wooden box. “We need to open it.”
“Uh huh, but I am scared.”
“Yeah but…” He lays his hand on it. She musters her courage and does the same. They lift it together.
“What the…” said in unison. Inside are papers, documents. Just a casual glance shows why the box is labeled as it was. For every ‘gloomy day’ is represented. There is info on the Kennedy and Lincoln assassins, info on 911. Incredible stuff, history changing stuff.
“We take it home and study it. Then decide.” She replies.
