Okay @sodaliteskull requested the letter M for characters to yap about. (Here’s the post if you’re curious)
So I could talk about Mel and that would be easy since she's the mc of WYS, but WYS is low-key on hiatus right now and that feels like low-hanging fruit anyway so let's go with someone else.
Today I'm going to talk about Maddox Abbiati, one of the main characters in Nearly Parallel Lives.
Maddox Abbiati was born on the sea, lives on the sea, and will die on the sea. A fearless and fearsome pirate captain, people dread the day his ship appears on the horizon.
Or at least, that's what he tells people.
In reality, Maddox isn't quite the famous captain he claims to be. He was indeed born on the sea, his parents being high ranking captains in the infamous Pirate King's fleet, and his mother being the Pirate King's own sister. When he was six years old his parents were killed in battle with another pirate clan. The Pirate King, after seeking revenge for the death of his sister, took his young nephew under his wing. Knowing how dangerous the pirate life can be, the King imposed some very strict rules on Maddox, determined to keep him alive at least to adulthood, and avoid losing another family member.
Maddox quickly began to chafe under these rules. He wanted to explore, to see the world, and most importantly, be a real pirate captain. So, at seventeen, he did what any average rebellious teen would do. With the help of his best friend Aedan Carboni, he stole a schooner from his uncle's fleet, and the two of them (technically three but they didn’t know about the stowaway at the time) set off on their own adventure.
It's been four years since then, and Maddox and Aedan, now with a few more friends, are still dodging strict uncles and responsibilities, getting themselves in and out of trouble, and overall having a blast.
Maddox likes to boast about his "captainly skills" and all that, but he knows he couldn't have done any of it without his friends, and he truly appreciates them.
That doesn't stop him from being incredibly cocky and insufferable though. It's okay, Aedan's there to patch him up when he breaks a bone again from doing some dumb stunt.
