Happy 145th birthday to Orville Wright (of the Wright brothers)! On this day in 1971, in honor of his centennial, NPR’s Fred Calland spoke with aviation historian—and Wright brothers acquaintance—Paul E. Garber on All Things Considered to discuss the significance of the Wright brothers’ work. Garber played an integral role in the creation of the Smithsonian National Air Museum in 1946, and went on to be the museum’s first curator.
Of course the Wright Brothers weren’t the only ones trying to conquer the air, as we were reminded at the Olympics opening ceremony. Alberto Santos-Dumont successfully flew a distance of 220 meters (6 meters off the ground) in his 14-BIS airplane.
This manuscript, which was written, gosh, almost nine years ago, got more rejections than any other of the 14 books that I've ever published. I think, on the one hand, publishers were worried about potentially offending people because you can talk about challenging topics with children, but I think it's easier to go with books that depict television characters or sweet stories. And this is a sweet story, but it's also a different story, and I think people are afraid of what's different sometimes.
