The second generation Galaxie 1960-64 was completely redesigned for a more futuristic and sleek look. Bodywork was restyled in 1961 and engine options changed. In 1963 Ford introduced the Galaxie 500 as a top line model. Engines consisted of a 292 Ci standard in the 500/XL a high performance 406 Ci was introduced and at the other end of the spectrum a 223 Ci six.. Only minor trim changes followed for 1963, but in mid-year a lower roofline (Sports Roof) was added to improve looks and to make the car more competitive on the NASCAR circuits together with a limited supply of the 427 Ci with 425 hp. For 1964 the final year of this generation trim was drastically altered the car became more aerodynamic, the 427 Ci engine continued and for racing a 427 Ci cammer engine developing 600 hp was used in stripped out lightweight racer, this engine was considered to powerful for the public.
