Had an awesome time at the KBF Trail Series tournament on Fort Loudon Lake in Knoxville TN. There was a new format with this tournament where there were two separate tournaments, one on Saturday and another on Sunday. I though this was a cool idea because it gives anglers the opportunity to fish just one day or both depending on their schedule. The first couple days I spent prefishing out on the main lake. I was able to catch lots of fish, but nothing over 16”. My last day of practice I launched at a ramp up river and found some bigger fish. Most of the fish were caught flipping, but I caught my largest with a crankbait. My iRod Gabe’s RipRap Special is the perfectly balanced for throwing those crankbaits that run from 3-8 feet. I was fortunate enough to walk away with a 1st place finish the first day, and a 2nd place finish the second day. Big congrats to Barry Davis for edging me out for the win on day two! It’s absolutely incredible to see how fast the sport of kayak tournament fishing is growing. Yesterday ten anglers had the opportunity to walk up on the Bassmaster Classic stage in Birmingham Alabama. The first ever Bassmaster Kayak Series tournament was hosted on Logan Martin Lake this past Thursday, 230 anglers competed, and the results were kept a secret until the following day. The top ten were brought up on stage to give a tournament recap and thank sponsors. I was lucky enough to squeak in with a ninth place finish. To be honest, an hour into the tournament I thought I didn’t have a prayer to even catch a fish, let alone get a top ten finish. The night before the tournament we had close to 4” of rain. I was fishing an area way up river towards the dam, and arrived in the morning to find everything completely flooded, and the water looked like chocolate milk. I was committed to that ramp because my buddy was launching at the dam, 8 miles up river , floating down to me, and was dependent on me giving him a ride back. A couple hours into the morning I got my first bite and caught a nice 18.5”. It surprised the hell out of me to be honest. My next bite was several hours later, another decent one. My third bite came at a little after 1:30, with an hour and a half left to go. Next one with 1/2 hour left to go. I then loose a fish with about 20 minutes left, but caught my final 5th keeper with around 10 minutes of fishing time left . I let out a sigh of relief and headed in. My first tourney was brutal. Wind was killer—post frontal fishing. I also went mudding again, only this time in my yak. Highlight of the day was my watch buzzing like crazy while fighting the wind. I couldn’t stop to see what the fuss was about, but quick glance I knew the tourney had already been won 2-3 hours in. Jason DeMott had landed a monster fish, but that didn’t stop me. That’s not me. I fish to win. I work to win. The itch is stronger. You can bet I’ll be ready for the season opener. I’m coming. And a huge congrats to @_innova_ my boy landed a 24”. Got out to Piercy Priest Lake with my buddy Josh for a few hours yesterday morning. The wind started gusting around 25mph by noon so we called it a day. Crushed them on the Harpeth River this morning! Chris, Kent and I all caught a largemouth over 4 lbs. A couple even bigger ones came unbuttoned. The water level was way up, and expectations were pretty low, but we found a nice little wintering hole that they were stacked up in. This time of year slower moving sections of river with deep water and rock are good areas to fish.
