PROLOGUE Before Splatoon
(CW: Substances, Abuse, Child Endangerment)
Doto grew up with his parents on the Coast of Inkadia, but their home was a hazardous and dangerous place. His father had been fired for drinking and aggressive behavior, so his mother was the sole provider. However, most of her paycheck was quickly spent on beer and cigarettes, often without her knowledge. The household felt like a battlefield, the constant reek of cigars and alcohol, having to be cautious about the words said within the walls, and the physical fights and beatings. Some of these fights result in Doto's father leaving to visit one of the neighbors. Sometimes he would leave and forbid Doto from coming along, leaving the young boy alone until he returned. Despite this, Doto had a good heart, thanks to his mother's influence, but as he grew up he resented his father. One day the boy got tired of being a victim to his father's behavior.
During a typhoon, Doto progressively hid and threw out most of the alcohol and cigars, which within a few days caused his father to go into withdrawal. He saw his opportunity and scolded his father for his addiction, all he wanted was a loving father and wanted him to change. Watching the young boy scold him enraged the man. He beat Doto unconscious. When the boy regained consciousness he felt cold all over and as if his body was floating. It took him a while to realize this, but he was about 10 kilometers off the coast of Lake of Inkadia. His father had used the family dinghy and thrown him in the middle of the storm while he was knocked out. The young Inkling tried to keep fighting, frantically wailing his arms and legs, trying his best to keep himself afloat, but he could barely keep his head above the raging waves. His desperate attempts at staying above the water start failing, his lungs felt as if they're about to burst as he holds in what could be his final breath. Fortunately, his mother came just in time to pull him out of the water. As his cold, drenched body was carried inside of the house, his father's words echoed in his mind: "If you dare utter another word, boy, I will find you and I will give you more than a beating." Doto chose to stay silent after that threat, choosing to only communicate via Sign Language, or writing down on a notepad.
Doto's mother had been saving up for him to move to Inkopolis, trying to keep it secret and eventually telling her son. Doto had been hesitant on the plan despite being reassured it would work. He expressed repeatedly that he does not want to leave his mother alone with that monster of a man. The reason he went through with the idea of throwing out the substances is so that his father would change for the better. Maybe to him it was a good idea, but it failed and he feels guilty about it. His mother reassured that no matter where he is, his father won't find him. Even after his mother helped him escape to Inkopolis, he remained paranoid that his father would eventually find him. He lived in Inkopolis for about a year before he was drawn into the events of the first Splatoon game.
