As soon as Doto turned 13, he started job hunting in the middle of the Great Zapfish disappearance. In the midst of the citizens' panic and chaos, he was recruited into the New Squidbeak Splatoon. At first, he was hesitant, but desperate enough not to care what payment he'd receive. Given the title, "Agent 3," he now had to endure perilous missions to find clues about the Great Zapfish to supply energy to Inkopolis again. His first mission was a disaster, he ran away from the Octarians and hid the best he could, not firing his gun once.
After getting used to the missions, he was given a roof over his head within Octo Canyon. As the Cap'n noticed how malnourished the boy looked, he began asking questions, only to be answered through a notepad. Doto wrote that he'd always been surviving on scraps and whatever money he earned in Turf War battles. Cap'n Cuttlefish didn't see that as an acceptable way to live and told the rest of the splatoon.
Agent 1 and Agent 2, the granddaughters of Cap'n Cuttlefish, heard Doto's story, and the entire splatoon unanimously decided to adopt him. Finally, at the end of the day, Doto had a home he could return to. These attachments scared him at first, but he used their connections as motivation to finish his missions.
Following his training and a series of missions to reclaim stolen Zapfish, Doto is on the cusp of a major breakthrough. They've just defeated a massive boss, the Octowhirl, and it seems like the mission is nearly complete. But just as Doto is about to grab the recovered Zapfish, a giant mechanical tentacle emerges from the ground and snatches Cap'n Cuttlefish! This is where the mission takes a turn. A shadowy figure emerges from a flying saucer: none other than DJ Octavio, the legendary leader of the Octarians and Cap'n Cuttlefish's nemesis from the Great Turf War. He reveals his plan to use the stolen Great Zapfish to power his ultimate weapon, the Octobot King. With Cap'n kidnapped and the final boss revealed, familiar voices take over Doto's communication device. It's Agents 1 and 2—Cap'n Cuttlefish's granddaughters and the famous pop duo, the Squid Sisters. They guide him through the final assault on Octavio's base, leading to the climactic confrontation with the Octobot King itself. The Great Zapfish had returned and power was restored. Doto was expecting to be let go as an Agent since the world had been saved, but turns out the splatoon had other plans besides the one-time gig. The New Squidbeak Splatoon was not official, not yet at least. They've been planning for it to be an actual agency, but they need more people. So Doto stays, not only for his better future but the better future of Inkopolis.
In between the events of Splatoon 1 and Splatoon 2, Doto decided to abandon his former surname and replace it with the Cuttlefish name. He then started to work on music with Callie and Marie, making instrumentals for some of their songs and working as a DJ for extra money.
By the time he was 16, Doto and Cap'n Cuttlefish set off on an adventure. A research trip to the cape which was supposed to be Cap'n attempt to bond with Doto. That's where they encountered an Octoling within what seemed to be an abandoned facility. Cap'n ordered Agent 3 to fight the Octoling and hesitantly Doto follows the command. In the midst of the battle, an unknown third party interfered, causing the facility to break and all three of them falling and becoming separated. The Octoling, now titled “Agent 8”, is stuck with Cap'n Cuttlefish whilst Doto explores the underground parts of this new found facility.
While Agent 8 was collecting “thangs”, going through experiments, and recollecting memories in the form of Memcakes, Agent 3 had been busy trying to regroup with her and the Cap'n. Having stolen a CQ-87-A, an admin level keycard, they were able to access nearly every part that was off limits to Agent 8 and the Cap'n. The 3 of them communicated through the device as much as they could, but as their communication stopped for a few hours a distress signal started wailing. Agent 3 wasted no time and headed towards it, finding that Agent 8 and the Cap'n were at the end of it trapped inside a blender. Doto sprung into action, knocking the power source off the blender, breaking the glass, but landing unconscious on the floor during his rescue attempt. He remains unconscious until he feels a burning sensation on his face, Commander Tartar hijacked his mind and his memories turn hazy from there.
