Not to write fic about my own fic, but right now I'm obsessed with Joshua Kane (Marcus' partner) getting traded to the Metros post-Cottage/Jane reveal in the chat.

As a friend of Ilya's and a queer man himself, and because Hollanov didn't want Marcus to have to keep this a secret from his partner, Josh is one of the few people In The Know.

One person who doesn't know? Hayden.

So imagine Hayden's surprise when this random defenseman transfers from the Raiders (Montreal's sworn enemies) and Shane (notoriously slow to warm up to people and resistant to being befriended) starts acting like they're already best friends. Shane talks to him in the locker room, asks to see pictures of his cat, appears to have inside jokes with him, is helping him get settled in Montreal, ect. He even knows about Lily.

Hayden is so jealous that this rando has seemingly swooped in and stolen his best friend. Shane doesn't notice. Josh notices, thinks it's kind of funny, and is messaging Marcus about it 24/7 (Marcus is still in Boston bc QPP's don't get work visas for Canada when their partner abruptly gets traded).

Then Shane comes out to him and Hayden is like "OOOOH so you have a crush on Kane?" and Shane has to break the news that while his type is hockey player, he's dating a different one.

"His partner has dibs on being our third if me and Ilya ever want to have a threesome though."

Organizing my notes for Not the Boston WAGs while I consider writing some non-text fic extras and forgot that originally Marcus' partner was unlabeled aspec but then I fully made him aroace. Like rings and all. I have no memory of this.

Girl help I'm obsessed with my own OCs

He's not even a main one! Joshua Kane is Marucs' partner. He's a defenceman on the Boston Raiders who signed with them after a successful college career with the University of Denver.

College is where he met Marcus. They were roommates all four years and have been partners since their senior year. He's aromantic and asexual, and very secure in these identities now but had a lot of issues with his (lack of a) sexuality when he was younger. He never claims to be straight and wears his white and black rings openly while also knowing that if he tried to tell most hockey players that actually, he doesn't enjoy sex and doesn't understand romantic love, he'd be ridiculed and ostracized. Mayben even by other queer players like Ilya and Scott.

People keep complimenting the clear character voices, especially compared to other WAG fics (where everyone is, by necessity, an OC). But I think having a group with unique backgrounds lent itself well to characters that don't blur together.

I also have a doc with their backgrounds/struggles/hobbies/and catchphrases that makes distinct voices easier.

every update of your not a wag fic just brings me so much joy truly i am so ridiculously invested in these ocs now and I just end up giddy kicking my feet and smiling to be back with my friends the not wag chat every time I read a new chapter!!

Kicking my feet and gigling at this but also rubbing my hands together and laughing evilly because tuna melt next chapter...

Not that I think I'm going to bring any emotions to this part of canon that many other people haven't already explored but ch13 has been pretty much the only storyline I knew in advance, and it's been why I kept pushing myself to sit down and write. I'm so excited for it.
