Weird & Wonderful Wednesday
I was sort of surprised that I hadn't recommended this book before, because it's a classic.
It was published in 1984 and takes place in the ‘near future’ in relation to that. It’s about Case, a hacker. He stole from his employer, and was punished for it severely. Molly and those she represents come to him with a cure to what ails him, but, then, of course, it’s not as simple as that. They meet so many awesome (and all unique) characters in the story too. From an AI to a thief to a ninja even. I honestly never knew what was going to come next, and it was such a fun ride of a story.
Honestly, so much of not just science fiction, but, also, our world, is in some way or another from William Gibson. From cyberspace (the most famous), to something less known like ‘jacking in’. Not to mention, the sub-genre of cyberpunk didn’t exist until this and his other short stories. And, after reading the book, it’s not one of those classics where it’s a ‘classic’ and everyone then rolls their eyes. Even today, this book is both infinitely interesting, but also so prescient in some ways that it on occasion can be distressing.
