Baseless Katana Zero theory:

the little girl who Zero meets outside of his apartment isn’t real, as many players have surmised, but she’s not a hallucination -- she’s a flashback, just like Zero’s nightmares are.

Zero met the little girl for real when he was a much younger man -- possibly in the NULL project itself, or during the Cromag War? -- and they likely had a similar surrogate-family relationship of one kind or another, but time (and/or whatever circumstances led to Zero’s amnesia) led them to drift apart.

nevertheless, the little girl followed in Zero’s footsteps in assassination and intrigue: we know her now as Snow.
