From the New York Cotton Exchange to Digital Networks
Did you know that one of India's most famous mathematical prediction games actually started with the New York Cotton Exchange?
Back in the 1950s, people in Mumbai would predict the opening and closing rates of cotton being transmitted globally. When that practice was stopped, the pioneers of the system had to improvise to keep the numbers game alive—so they started drawing slips of paper from a large earthen pot (a "matka").
It is fascinating to see how a system relying on physical pots in the 1960s evolved into the massive, high-speed digital charts we use today.
