Loki is a labor and delivery nurse. Why did he choose to be a nurse instead of a doctor? For a few reasons. One, he wanted to help people and be where the action was, and nurses spent more time with their patients than doctors did. And two, it annoyed the hell out of his father. Win-win, as far as Loki is concerned.
He had decided to shift over to labor and delivery when he had heard stories from his mother about when she had been pregnant with his brother, Thor, and how she had not had the best experience. He wanted to be someone's best experience. Especially after hearing from his mother what it was like if you didn't get that. It didn't have to be a horror story to be a nightmare for the patient.
Loki had actually found being a labor and delivery nurse the most rewarding thing he'd ever done. He'd been in nursing in other areas, med surge, ER, just all over the place. The ER was the most exciting, but it was also the most heartbreaking and after a while, though he didn't admit it was for this reason, he just couldn't take the heartbreak anymore and he had to switch to something else. Eventually, after listening to his mother, he had landed on labor and delivery and he'd been here ever since.
His current favorite patient was a trans man named Mobius. He spent a little extra time on and with Mobius simply because he was here by himself without any visitors or anyone to sit with him and he felt bad for him. He was such a kind and sweet man. He was in labor and still hadn't lost his patience or temper and was very good at following instructions. And very good at making excuses for some deadbeat long-term boyfriend.
Loki did not suffer fools very well, and when the boyfriend finally did show up he was even more of a useless fool than Loki had thought he was upon hearing Mobius talk about him. And he tended to hit the call button for everything Mobius asked for, even the things that he could easily get up off of his lazy, fool ass and take care of himself.
Loki had let him have it several times, but when Loki walked in once to check Mobius's dilation to see how he was coming along, and heard the man absolutely berating Mobius and Mobius crying...Loki had had more than enough. Loki would be the first to admit that during this time it was very easy for a person in labor to cry over things. Small things, big things, miniscule things. It was normal, it was fine, and you did what you could to comfort them and made sure they had what they needed. You did NOT make them feel like they were stupid or pathetic and you did NOT laugh at them. Bringing life into the world was not easy, not physically and not emotionally or mentally. It was taxing for the soul. Worth it, if that is what you wanted to do, but no less exhaustive. And hormones were all over the place.
But, Loki absolutely threatened this abusive fool's life that if he would not leave of his own accord then Loki would not need to call security, he would take care of the problem himself and there would be nothing to hospital could do for him when Loki was through if this man did not get the fuck out of the hospital right now and not come back.
