4 Simple Phrases Smart People Use - and 4 They Avoid
In order to attain success, we must take the right actions. All too often, people are blocked from success because they don’t communicate properly in order to achieve everything they want.
In our daily lives, we are often judged by what we say and how we represent ourselves. Smart people will usually know the right things to say -- and when they are wrong, they’ll admit it.
Here are 4 simple phrases that smart people use, along with four phrases they will avoid using.
Smart People Say...
“I’m Sorry”
This one might be very difficult for some people. Often, external sources take the view that apologizing -- for anything -- indicates weakness. But that couldn’t be further from the truth; having the humility to admit when we’re wrong shows that we’re actually smart enough to acknowledge our own flaws. Don’t be afraid to acknowledge your mistakes.
“What Do You Think?”
Let’s face it: You don’t know everything, and acting as if you do won’t endear you to many people. When you’re faced with a problem you can’t solve by yourself, it’s time to take a breath and ask for other ideas. That shows good judgment, flexibility and the ability to work with a team.
“Great Work!”
All too often, people feel unappreciated when they do a good job -- and unfairly criticized for every little mistake. No matter what your relationship, from business to personal, it’s important to offer praise when it’s warranted. All of us can use a little positive reinforcement from time to time, even if we are extremely independent and self-motivated.
“Thank You”
It seems like it might be quite obvious, but saying “thank you” goes a long way to building rapport with your peers. Many leaders don’t say “thank you” enough, and it makes their employees feel downright ignored. Incorporating this phrase into your personal life will also be beneficial, from the barista brewing your morning cup of joe to the person holding the door open for you.
They Don’t Say…
“It’s Not Fair”
Anyone who has any real life experience knows that life isn’t fair. So it’s not even worth wasting your breath uttering this phrase; you’ll appear immature and naive. Instead, try to conjure up positive thoughts when you encounter roadblocks. Smart people find constructive ways to solve problems when they arise. And sometimes they have to simply throw their hands up and accept they can’t change something -- or someone -- that is beyond their control.
“You Always” or “You Never”
The world is rarely black-and-white, and nobody “always” or “never” does anything. But when we see things from our narrow-minded view, it might seem that way. Before you feel the urge to utter these no-no phrases, take a step back and maybe get a broader perspective.
“Whatever” or “Whatever You Want”
Not only does this indicate indecisiveness, but it also implies that you don’t care about what the other person is asking. Instead, say: “I don’t have a strong opinion either way, but a couple things to consider are...” When you offer an opinion -- even if it’s pointing out both the pros and cons -- it shows that you truly attach significance to the issue at hand.
“As I Said Before”
This phrase can sound very condescending, like you are insulted that you have to repeat something you’ve already said. Everyone forgets things from time to time, so try to be more diplomatic if somebody didn’t remember the proper procedure or key step in a problem. As an alternative, you can start with “Do you remember…” and then gently restate your message in a clearer way.
