Alright I did it, a nuzzlocke run of monster hunter stories 2. This is the story of Scrimmy Bingus, the stupid dragonfruit haired idiot.
I had rules for my run.
- I could only get 1 monstie per area that can spawn dens (not counting dens themselves). I did allow myself the monsties you get in the first few hours of the game just so I could have a rounded team right off bat. I also allowed myself Ratha and Ranmar. However I did also allow myself to take eggs for gene grinding purposes from anywhere. Dupes Clause was in effect.
- If a monstie fainted, it died and I could only use it for genes.
- Ally deaths did not count against the run.
- I had to name my monsties so it hurt when they died.
- If all my usable monsters died then I failed the run.
I did also use the MHS2 Guide app, which I’ve had on my phone for years because it’s just handy. It’s a detailed database of everything in the game except for the content in the final title update. I may have also cheated a few times to test how hard the royal gammoth hit to gauge when to come back, because I wanted a gammoth.
Thankfully I actually didn’t suffer many losses aside from fucking with royal monsters because I constantly was gathering materials and grinding, so by the time I made it to Oltura I was actually overleveled. That doesn’t mean I didn’t suffer losses however.
I lost my starter Pukei-Pukei The Puker not long into the journey because I got cocky. During the part of the story where Kyle takes Ratha from you, I was without a power monster and used my Bulldrome Baconator. Unfortunately I lost him in the tower, which made that section a hell that burnt through my potions. I also lost my Nargacuga Ninjr to the uragaan boss fight, which is a bummer because his sneak was really helpful and I had him quite awhile. And sadly, my Zinogre Flurgle gave his life in the fight against Oltura.
This was my gear.
And this was my final team going against Oltura.
Ratha, who is just a reliable monster (and you can’t take him off the team). Ratha’s stats are slightly above Azure Rathalos, making him one of the better fire monsties in the game.
The late Flurgle, who I got from making the Zinogre retreat in the path leading to the rage-rayed Astalos.
Wall, who I got by making the Gammoth retreat. Ice monsters were done dirty this game and I was shocked that a base Gammoth monstie’s stats were worse than a Zamtrios’s. Hence the health gene.
Spoderman, who I got in Loloska Forest. She was a very reliable status effect monster on my team.
Slop Man, who I got from the Lavina Mine. Barroth is a surprisingly viable monstie. There’s many better choices, but you can’t really go wrong with a Barroth on your team.
And finally Shznark, who is surprisingly tanky. I was trying to gene grind him into the dragon element member of the team, but I got fed up and just decided to beat the story already.
I gave all of them except Ratha one shot attack moves, because you’d be surprised how often it procs. And you can probably notice that the team covers all major rider actions aside from lava walking.
Other monsties I had available were:
- My Yian Kut-Ku Kunk-Ku, who remained useful all the way to mid game.
- Ranmar, who you get after the tutorial, and was also very useful.
- BlueStreak, my other Velocidrome you get at the start.
- ScramblEgg, my Kulu-Ya-Ku.
- WhitCheeto (pronounced White Cheeto) my Paolumu.
- Peckr, my Qurupeco.
- Fishticks, my Cephadrome.
- PrpleFlurp, my Purple Gypceros.
- And Dapper, my lagiacrus (named after @dappercritter because it’s his favorite monster).
I’m not done quite yet. My copy of stories 3 doesn’t actually get to me until the 16th (because I prefer having a physical copy), and there’s still the high rank stuff. I will be allowing myself to use monsties from 1 deviant den on my team.
