"Compass Points" is an AGCS Track of the Year

The AGCS Christmas Calendar counts down our 24 favourite tracks of the year.

#3 - NZCA/LINES - Compass Points

NZCA/LINES has already been featured in this countdown, with "Work" at #17 in our tracks of the year and NZCA/LINES named as one of our albums of the year, so it is at the risk of repeating myself that I say that their record is the most exciting British debut I've heard in years. I would strongly urge you to go and buy it now. Still not convinced? Well here's a little something to incentivize you; the exquisite synth pop of album opener "Compass Points". If this doesn't persuade you of NZCA/LINES' brilliance I don't know what will.

There are two points in this song, at the 2.30 and 2:45 mark, where a multi-tracked Michael Lovett deliriously yelps "YES". These two tiny fragments of euphoria fill me with an indescribable burst of joy, acting as an audio analgesic, a temporary relief from all that is wrong with the world. This alone is enough to mark "Compass Points" as one of my favourite tracks of 2012, to the extent where I see little point in writing about the rest of the song. Just listen to those glorious "YES"-es. And then buy the album.

#17 - NZCA/LINES - Work

NZCA/LINES are easily my favourite discovery of the year, a band I came across while checking out this years Latitude line-up on Spotify and who, four weeks later, blew me away in front of a too-small crowd on the Lake Stage. By that point I had already bought and memorised their excellent debut NZCA/LINES, one of 2012's best records; an album where with every outstanding track that passed I was expecting a dip in quality which never came. It speaks volumes that on such a consistently brilliant record, "Work" was a stand out.

Featuring an insistent synth bassline and Michael Lovett's bewitching, gossamer-thin vocals, "Work" is a perfect encapsulation of everything that makes NZCA/Lines such an irresistible concept. Lyrics that flit between the mundane and the profound, falsetto ooooh-ing, synth lines drifting in and out of focus. And of course, like everything I've heard by NZCA/LINES, catchy in a way you don't fully realise until days later when the song is still echoing around your skull. A superb track from one of Britain's brightest talents.
