One would assume that if a Indian lady that owns an Indian import shop and offers mendhi application services for a not-so-cheap price that you would come out of there looking pretty great.

One would assume incorrectly.  I think I could have done this better at home with one of those DIY henna kits you see in the novelty section of Barnes and Noble.  The shit just looks BAD, and it's henna so it's stained on there and the formal is tomorrow and I hate spending money on myself to a point of neurosis, anyway, but when it turns out badly, it throws me into a serious freakout.  

My hands look like I've been playing around with self-tanner crayons whilst stoned.  I have to dress up and play nice officer's wife tomorrow, and my hands and feet are stupid and orange and I just want to cry now.
