One of the shinies I found while doing my professor oak challenge in Sapphire! Another was a shiny shuppet that I failed because the gameboy I had has a finicky power switch and had turned off before I could save 😞 Might go back for a reclaim later

He does it!
pokemon revelation oak challenge - section 1 complete
40 hours (nearly 41) in, 1 shiny, got pokerus, and no badge.
i actually took a break between my last post on this and like 2 days ago or round about. the only difference so far between this and a normal emerald oak challenge is that in rustboro you actually trade for a makuhita rather than a seedot, so hariyama is also part of this first section when usually itd be in the second.
still thinking on who to beat roxanne with- it's not like I have many options really, only like several lvl 20+ fully evolved pokemon with type advantage to blast her rocks to smithereens.
though it was suggested that instead I use my pickup team, which sounds obnoxiously rude and mean to roxanne since these guys only know normal type moves. So of course this is the perfect choice
anyway, my wrist hurts from being held at an awkward angle for multiple days in a row between this and skyrim so roxanne will wait a minute i think. looking forward to what section 2 brings

REVELATION OAK CHALLENGE - THE BELLY DRUM SWEEP
revelation oak challenge - section 7 complete
Whoa that was a lot of hard work
revelation oak challenge - "Section 4" complete
its a small one, more of an intermission between the sections of east hoenn and the sections of west! so it didnt take too long, right
weird. that's... nearly 10 hours. why?
so we're getting a bit up there in the levels, and our lower level evos are both in the medium slow group. still, we're already familiar with that kind of grind. it's not just that the levels required are high.
it's also that baltoy and trapinch are rancid.
baltoy gets psybeam and... not a whole lot else. and even with psybeam it still struggles horribly due to its stats- in the section before, spoink was able to breeze through most anything with psybeam thanks in part to good nature but also due to a base special attack stat of 70.
baltoy's base special attack is 40, and its others ain't much better. being a ground type in this section doesn't help either, but we'll get to that later. let's look at trapinch
so for a bit of context beforehand, gen 3 as well as being before electric-type paralysis immunity was also before the "physical/special split". in this period, physical and special attack status was not specific to moves, but to types! for example, hyper beam is a special attack today, but it's a normal-type move; therefore, in gen 3 it was a physical attack.
included in physical types was ground, which combined with trapinch's base attack stat of 100 you would think would be great! except the only damaging ground move it learns before evolving is sand tomb. dig isn't until 41. cool. so hold onto that dig tm
well, ok, but it DOES learn bite and faint attack! those ain't too bad- oh, but hang on, unlike ground, dark was classified as special in this gen. um
whats. trapinch's base special attack
Oh this thing is simply no good.
revelation oak challenge - section 3 complete
hey, it's like im getting good at this!
this is quite a roster- we got some sun stones and moon stones, both for evolving mons like skitty into delcatty and for registering in the dex because... lunatone is available during the nighttime!
meanwhile, we're starting to raise the bar a little. sandslash and machoke are still 20s evos, but the rest are past level 30 and notably... slow. not in their leveling group mind you, but in their stats and getting decent moves.
for example, both slugma and grimer evolve at level 38 and are in the same group (medium fast), but the best move slugma can learn until level THIRTY SIX (36!!!) is... ember. meanwhile, grimer gets sludge and can be taught dig, so it basically breezes through anything on our training routes (mainly lombre and zangoose ideally). that and slugma still can't outrun a level 17 swablu by level 34...
in spite of its difficulties though, slugma DOES still learn flamethrower at 36 making its last 2 levels go by much smoother. thru patience, understanding, and a little bit of throwing my hands in the air as though id heard about videogames when slugma gets hit with sing for the 20th time, we got through this whole section without using any rare candies, leaving us with a stash of 20 candy!
and with the section coming up, we're gonna need them
