One of the first things I do when I get to South Florida, after I stop at Publix and eat the same fantastic sub I've been ordering for more than a decade, is drive to Total Wine and whiskey watch. Whiskey watching is just like people watching, but with a 99% higher chance of me going home with some of the eye candy at the end of the day.
(Also for those curious few, my Publix Sub: Honey maple turkey on wheat with mayo and honey mustard. Add muenster cheese, green peppers, pickles, banana peppers, and oil and vinegar. No need to thank me.)
On my latest whiskey-watching trip I picked up some local Florida whiskey and a bottle of Compass Box Oak Cross. I thought that this particular Compass Box whisky had been reviewed in the Winter 2012 issue of Whiskey Advocate magazine with the outstanding review of 93. In the review Dominic Roskrow called the latest Compass Box Oak Cross "my new best friend." As someone always looking for a new best bud, I picked up a bottle for under $50. I didn't realize until I got home that Roskrow's review was referencing the Oak Cross with a 46% alc/vol, while the bottle I picked up at Total Wine was 43%.
Actually the 43% bottle certainly serves its purpose and is highly drinkable and very smooth. While the bottle isn't my new best friend, we are not fighting and are more than Facebook friends. In fact, this bottle of Compass Box Oak Cross and I are spending the evening together and we'll see where the relationship goes from there.
